How Candyman's Jordan Peele And Director Nia DaCosta Bonded Through Horror Fandom

How Candyman's Jordan Peele And Director Nia DaCosta Bonded Through Horror Fandom
Candyman poster closeup

This past weekend saw the phenomenal release of Jordan Peele’s Us, and the good news for those already hungry for more horror stories from the filmmaker is that he has many irons in the fire. For example, there is the new version of The Twilight Zone that he is producing and hosting for CBS All Access – but on the feature side of things there is the tremendously exciting new take on Candyman that he is making with writer/director Nia DaCosta.

News of DaCosta’s hiring came just a couple months after the announcement about the project’s development late last year, and also just a few months after the world premiere of her feature debut, Little Woods (which played at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival). In the time since, not much has been revealed about the direction of the new Candyman, but while sitting down with DaCosta this past weekend, I learned about a key ingredient in her collaboration with Jordan Peele:

I think something that we connect on a lot was the way we view horror, and our love of horror. I love Candyman, but also just like breaking down what horror is, how it's represented, what it means, and why it's important. I think we really connected on that, and so that's a lot of what our conversations have been about… that I can tell you (laughs). It's been great. He's a wonderful creator, collaborator, human, artist.

With the film set to be released in a few weeks, Little Woods held its Los Angeles press day on Sunday, and it was at the end of my interview with Nia DaCosta and star/executive producer Tessa Thompson that I inquired about the development of her upcoming horror remake. Specifically I asked about the conversations that she had been having with Jordan Peele, and she explained how a shared vision of what horror can do and why it’s effective is really driving their work together on Candyman.

Naturally I felt compelled to follow-up by asking about her philosophy in the genre, and what she stressed was both engaging with the audience, and also telling stories that bring home important messages in subversive ways. It’s a key staple of horror that has existed from the beginning, and a tradition that Nia DaCosta plans to uphold in her venture. Said the filmmaker,

What I like about genres like thrillers, and why I think tensions are important for all movies, including dramas, it's physicalizing what the characters are feeling for the audience. That's really important, and gets the audience to engage and to lean in. And then with horror you can sneak in messages. You know sneak in what you think about the world around you, and how actually horrifying the world is. You get to hide it in these layers. 'This is about a ghost, but really it's about paranoia and a woman's place in the world.' Or, you know, 'This is about a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents, but really it's about... Actually a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents.' (laughs)

Based on a short story by Clive Barker that was first adapted in 1992, Candyman centers on an urban legend that is being investigated by a college student – specifically one about a violent entity who appears and attacks anyone who dares to say his name five times into a mirror. Yahya Abdul-Matten II, who has earned notoriety in recent months thanks to his performance in James Wan’s Aquaman and Jordan Peele’s Us, is currently the only member of the cast, set to play the titular villain.

With Nia DaCosta directing and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld writing the script, Candyman is currently on track to be released on June 12, 2020 – produced by Monkeypaw Productions and MGM. For those of you who want to get a taste of what DaCosta is bringing to the table as a filmmaker, however, (and I highly recommend that you do), Little Woods is set up with distribution from Neon, and will be getting a limited release starting on April 19th.

Brie Larson Doesn't Get Why People Are Surprised By Captain Marvel's $1 Billion Success

Brie Larson Doesn't Get Why People Are Surprised By Captain Marvel's $1 Billion Success
Captain Marvel enjoying the fight

As Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie, some might have believed that Captain Marvel had a great deal of pressure on it to perform. Well, perform it did because Captain Marvel recently passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, becoming just the 7th MCU movie (38th movie overall) to achieve that incredible feat. Entering the three-comma club is quite the achievement, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise according to the film’s star Brie Larson, who said:

I’m very grateful to have broken this glass ceiling of normalizing the concept that women can also make a billion dollars. I don’t know why that was so hard to comprehend in the first place. It’s just like we’re human, whatever. If people needed this to be another reminder this decade [that minority groups can open movies and make a billion dollars] then great, I’m here, I did it.

Brie Larson is thankful to have had her film become such a massive global success, but she doesn’t see what she did as anything groundbreaking or anything that should be viewed as a surprise. In her mind there was never any reason to think that a film led by a woman couldn’t be successful and hit the billion-dollar mark. To her, Captain Marvel is just the latest proof of that.

What Brie Larson is touching on here in her discussion with Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Radhika Jones and the Women in the World summit, is the narrative that female-led blockbusters can’t be successful. This is an antiquated notion that has perpetuated over the years, and although it has long since been disproven, every female-led movie seemingly has the pressure to prove it again and succeed not just for itself, but for all those female-led movies that hope to come after.

The Carol Danvers actress rejects this notion, and sees Captain Marvel as just the most recent movie to show that movies don’t have to fit in the traditional mold to succeed. Any good human story can find success with audiences. She seems to hope that while Captain Marvel isn’t the first female-led movie to find success, it will hopefully normalize the concept and put the matter to bed.

Brie Larson is certainly right that Captain Marvel’s success should not have come as a surprise because it was female-led. In recent years we have seen female-led films like Lucy, The Hunger Games, Frozen and Wonder Woman all become massive hits. Some may not have reached quite the level that Captain Marvel did, but Brie Larson’s heroine is far from the first to bring in the big bucks.

If anything the only surprise with Captain Marvel was the degree to which it succeeded. As an MCU film is was bound to make money, but for the new-to-the-universe character to be in the $1+ billion company of the team-up films, surpassing every other solo film sans Black Panther and Iron Man 3, is quite the feat.

You can next see Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel in another film that will undoubtedly be in the three-comma club, Avengers: Endgame, which arrives in two short weeks on April 26. To keep track of all this year’s biggest movies, check out our 2019 Release Schedule.

Robert De Niro Could Join A DC Comics Movie

Robert De Niro Could Join A DC Comics Movie

Comic book movies are becoming so prevalent that you begin to worry if Hollywood may run out of actors to cast in them. Now, it appears one of our greatest actors might be up for consideration in one of those films. A new rumor indicates that Robert De Niro is being looked at for a role in the forthcoming Joker origin story movie.

I would tell you to take this was a massive grain of salt but you might want to take this one with the entire salt shaker to be safe. The rumor comes from That Hashtag Show which references an anonymous source for its information regarding eight different roles that they claim will be part of the new Joker origin story movie which has been rumored to want Joaquin Phoenix in the lead. Among the numerous character descriptions, which are, in themselves fairly vague, is the vaguest among them, a character named Murry Franklin who is described as a Caucasian between 65-75 years of age. This is the part that director Todd Philips and co-producer Martin Scorsese are apparently looking to De Niro to fill. The part is being called a significant one in the film, even though details on exactly who the character is are quite minimal compared to some of the other character descriptions that have been revealed through this same source. As a 74-year-old Caucasian, the Taxi Driver actor does technically fit the description of the character, so it is possible De Niro could take the part, though far from certain.

The idea of Robert De Niro having a major role in a movie about a comic book supervillain does seem pretty out there, but everything we've heard about the project as implied that this movie wants to be something very different than the traditional comic book movie. The fact that Martin Scorcese is attached as a producer puts the Joker movie in a class by itself already, and the frequent association between Scorcese and De Niro certainly means that seeing De Niro in the movie isn't strictly impossible.

It's not like seeing Robert De Niro act opposite The Joker would be the weirdest thing he's ever done. This is the guy who made Dirty Grandpa, after all.

Of course, just because Robert De Niro's favorite director happens to be involved in this project is far from confirmation that De Niro is actually being considered for this part, nevermind any sort of confirmation that he might take it. At this point we know very little about this Joker project, beyond the fact that it has a writer and a director, everything else is a rumor, so we'll add this one to the pile, and see what, if anything, comes of it.

Suicide Squad was a box office success, grossing $325.1 million in the United States and Canada and $421.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $746.8 million, against a production budget of $175 million ($325 million including advertising and promotion costs).

Sony Has Big Plans For The Spider-Verse

Sony Has Big Plans For The Spider-Verse
Venom creature voiced by Tom Hardy in 2018 film

Sony was seriously thriving in 2018 and they can thank much of their success to the universe home to one friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Between Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the studio scored $1.2 billion in worldwide box office earnings and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for the latter.

Sony’s plan to keep the Spider-Verse rolling is the clear cut next move but turns out the studio is playing the long game. Sony Pictures execs Tony Vinciquerra and Mike Hopkins recently told Variety they already have the next seven or eight years laid out regarding what’s coming next for their newly established Spider-Verse on both the big screen but on television as well.

There is already a sequel for Venom in the works and another Spider-Verse spinoff starring anti-hero Morbius is currently being filmed, both assumed to hit theaters in 2020. There have also been talks movies for the Marvel characters Nightwatch, Silk, Silver Sable and Black Cat are being developed by Sony, though they seem to be in early development.

On the animation end, the wildly popular Into the Spider-Verse is already happening, along with a female-fronted spinoff starring Spider-Gwen. Considering all the spider-heroes introduced in the critically-acclaimed movie such as Peni Parker, Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir, there are tons of possibilities for the franchise to continue here as well.

With the Disney/Fox merger closing next week, Sony will soon be the only rival studio with rights to Marvel characters. Warner Bros has also started to find its own success with DCEU adaptations, such as Aquaman. Remaining competitive is likely futile considering the impact this deal is likely to have on the media industry as a whole.

In the interview, the executives teased a large volume of content from the Spider-Verse coming our way after the pair of Marvel successes from last year gave them the confidence to pursue this ongoing project. The same will go for plans to adapt characters from the Spider-Verse to a variety of television shows, as Warner Bros has done with Gotham, Netflix with Daredevil, FOX with The Gifted and ABC with Agents of SHIELD.

Luckily for Sony, there are tons of interesting characters, with diverse stories that have graced Spider-Man comics, that doesn’t necessarily need to star the masked web-shooter also known as Peter Parker in order for their stories to work. There’s quite a bit of curiosity for lesser-known characters in the comic book genre among the masses so it just might work. Just look at the recent success of Captain Marvel on screen – her origin wasn’t exactly common knowledge beforehand and the film's crushing it at the box office.

It’s an exciting time to be a Spider-Man fan as Sony makes it a mission to develop more movies and television shows centered around the various characters in the Spider-Verse.

Captain Marvel Box Office: The Blockbuster Keeps Going Higher, Further, Faster

Captain Marvel Box Office: The Blockbuster Keeps Going Higher, Further, Faster
March 15-17, 2019 Box Office Captain Marvel

Following its massive opening weekend, there was little doubt that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel would be able to take the top spot again at the box office, and the film very much lived up to expectations in its second Friday to Sunday. The numbers aren't quite out of this world, as the movie dropped a fairly standard 54 percent, but the amount of money that the blockbuster is pulling in is still quite impressive. Check out the full Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis!

Captain Marvel had the seventh best debut in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (not factoring in inflation), and it's quickly making its way up the ranks overall. Thanks to the money that it made this weekend, it not only crossed the $200 million line domestically, but also flew past the run totals for Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Doctor Strange, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It's hard to estimate exactly where it will wind up in the rankings over all once its done with its theatrical run, but there's a chance it could wind up in the franchise's Top Five if everything goes according to plan.

The success is very much continuing overseas as well, where the film is actually now the eleventh most successful Marvel international release with a total of $762.1 million. Part of this is because the film has already landed in China, where it has already brought in over $104 million in the last five days. And in case you were wondering, yes, these numbers now make it so that Captain Marvel is the most successful release of 2019 so far, with its totals now surpassing the Chinese blockbuster The Wandering Earth, which dropped into theaters in its home country back in early February.

None of this is surprising at all, of course, as there is no questioning the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand. These films have basically been deemed must-sees by the movie-going public ever since the release of The Avengers back in 2012, and nothing is slowing the film down. In fact, there's a good chance that the only title being released in the next couple of months that will be able to surpass the totals of the Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck film will be Avengers: Endgame, which is expected to be a record-breaker when it lands in theaters worldwide at the end of April.

What was good news for Captain Marvel, however, was most definitely not good news for the other new releases that arrived in theaters this weekend - with the exception of Nacho Garcia Velilla's No Manches Frida 2. The Spanish-language comedy (which is a sequel to 2016's No Manches Frida) was released on less than 500 screens nationwide, and not only was it able to make it on to the Top 10, but it landed sixth place. Of course, a haul of $3.9 million isn't exactly extraordinary, but it's definitely significant when you factor in that the movie had the second best per screen average of any other title featured on the chart.

Of the wide releases, Wonder Park (which doesn't have a credited director) actually managed to surpass expectations, as prognosticators suggested that it was only going to make about $10 million in its first three days. Still, things don't look great for the animated film, which apparently on its way to losing a significant amount of money. Having been in development for a number of years, the project had a pre-marketing budget between $80 million and $100 million, and it doesn't appear that the movie's domestic numbers are going to be big enough to make that seem like a worthy investment.

Things didn't exactly go spectacularly for Justin Baldoni's romantic drama Five Feet Apart either, which ranked third with its $13.2 million take. The film got a mixed response from critics, and positive marks from audiences (it has an "A" on CinemaScore), but the numbers don't exactly compare to the similarly themed The Fault In Our Stars from a few years ago, which had a $48 million opening, and went on to make $307.2 million worldwide. Obviously this film is not going to go that distance.

The third and final wide release for the weekend was Rupert Wyatt's Captive State, which also failed to get any kind of legitimate attention - despite featuring a fantastic ensemble cast including John Goodman, Vera Farmiga, Ashton Sanders, Alan Ruck, James Ransone, and more. Unfortunately, it seems that audiences were really only interested in seeing one alien invasion movie this week, and while fans flocked to Captain Marvel, Captive State was left forced to settle for seventh place.

Lastly I'll shine a quick spotlight on Mike Mitchell's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part - which completed its sixth week of release on Sunday with an eighth place finish. With the additional $2.1 million added to its domestic total, the movie has now become the fifth 2019 title to make more than $100 million here at home (the others being The Upside, Glass, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and Captain Marvel). The film definitely isn't doing as well as its predecessor, which made over $250 million by the time it was done with theaters in 2014, but a milestone is still a milestone.

Coming up we have a very interesting showdown, as there's only one new release coming out on Friday, but it's a big one. Expectations are through the roof for Jordan Peele's Get Out follow-up, Us, and the new title could wind up surpassing the Oscar-winning feature's first three day total ($33.4 million). But will it be enough to dethrone Captain Marvel? It should ultimately make for one of the most exciting head-to-head matchups we've seen so far this year, and it will be exciting to see which movie walks away the big winner. Of course, you'll be able to find all of the details here on Sunday when the numbers come in and we do our full analysis, so be sure to come back then!

Kevin Feige ‘Wasn’t Pleased’ With Those Avengers: Endgame Leaks

Kevin Feige ‘Wasn’t Pleased’ With Those Avengers: Endgame Leaks
Black Widow in Endgame

After a long year of waiting, the time is finally upon us. Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters this week, picking up the narrative from Infinity War. The Russo Brothers shocked audiences by having Thanos win the day, and wipe out half of all life with the snap of his fingers. Audiences watched in horror as countless fan favorites faded to dust, and were left wondering what TF could happen next.

Marvel Studios has been guarding its secrets for the past year, focusing on Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel before revealing the first trailer and title of Endgame. But with days left before Endgame's premier, spoilers began leaking online. Now Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has addressed these leaks, saying:

I wasn’t pleased. It’s not cool. It’s not fun. But the response was what I expected, which was everybody turning it off, dismissing it, ‘Don’t watch it, don’t spoil it for anybody else.’

Considering how methodically Marvel has released information about Endgame, you can't blame Kevin Feige for being miffed about spoilers hitting the web before its release. But there is a silver lining: most fans have actively avoided them, attempting to get the full theatrical experience for the movie's opening weekend.

Kevin Feige's comments to The Associated Press make a great deal of sense, especially given how high the stakes of Avengers: Endgame are. Aside from picking the story from Infinity War, The Russo Brothers' highly anticipated blockbuster has been teased as the cumulation of the last 21 movies. Endgame's runtime is longer to accommodate the various plot lines, and the fandom deserves to experience each surprise. They've been shelling out money for a decade, after all.

The marketing campaign for Avengers: Endgame has been purposefully vague, mostly setting up the bleak world after Thanos' finger snap of death (aka The Decimation). While the surviving heroes will attempt to unite the stones and reverse Thanos' mass extermination, it's unclear exactly how. We have a ton of questions ahead of the film's release, and the limited footage doesn't answer much. So if the fandom actively tries to avoid spoilers, they should hopefully be able to see Endgame without knowing anything about the film's contents.

The next few days are crucial regarding Endgame spoilers, as the movie is finally being screened for the press and insiders. We're also only a day away from early Thursday shows, so social media will be a dangerous place for cinephiles waiting for their showing. CinemaBlend will continue covering the fourth Avengers flick but any spoiler-ey content will have a warning at the top of the page.

Godzilla: King Of Monsters Director Teases Idea For An Avengers Crossover

Godzilla: King Of Monsters Director Teases Idea For An Avengers Crossover

We are only about one month away from the release of Avengers: Endgame and the end of this iteration of the MCU as we know it. Though the plot is being treated like a military-grade secret, it's likely that the Avengers will be in need of a new villain by the time the rumored three hour runtime is complete. There are plenty of villains to choose from, but director Michael Dougherty presented a really cool option: Godzilla.

Michael Dougherty is the director of the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which will be hitting theaters in May. The sequel will find Godzilla going head-to-head against Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah in a battle to decide who is the alpha Titan of planet Earth. Having three of Godzilla's most iconic monster foes in one movie must not have been enough for Dougherty because he'd like to see Godzilla go to town on the Avengers.

And it's not such a crazy idea! There's actually some real history in the comics to support this, something that Mike Dougherty knows well. The director took to social media posting a picture of a comic book in which the Avengers had to fight Godzilla. Dougherty wrote that this movie would "make the world a better place" and I'd have to agree with him.

The comic book in reference is back during the late '70s when Marvel had the licensing rights to Godzilla. Occasionally during the issues it released, Godzilla would encounter Marvel superheroes, in one case going up against the Avengers. The heroes are called in to stop one of Godzilla's rampages.

It's not too hard to see why Dougherty would be 100% down for this crossover. The Avengers are arguably the biggest box office success in history, and a movie where they meet Godzilla would be filled with enough spectacle to make your eyes bleed. I don't know how the Avengers could ever beat Godzilla, but I also don't know how they will reverse half the universe getting erased either.

Even though an Avengers and Godzilla crossover is just an impossible dream right now (movie rights are owned by different studios), it's not like there isn't plenty to look forward to from both franchises. Endgame is just right around the corner, and the movie is already projected to shatter box office records.

Meanwhile, Godzilla doesn't have a shortage of foes to beat as he fights his arch-nemesis King Ghidorah in King of the Monsters. The trailers have teased that this is the effects-heavy, big budget monster brawl that fans have ben waiting years for and it looks like a very entertaining movie.

You can catch Avengers: Endgame on April 26, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters will follow about a little over a month later on May 31.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Has Blue And Green Milk But Which Is Better?

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Has Blue And Green Milk But Which Is Better?
Luke Skywalker drinking green milk in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is a new land that is all about making you feel like you're standing on an alien world in the galaxy far, far away. You get to fly in Star Wars spaceships. You can craft Star Wars weapons and droids. You can shop in an alien marketplace. However, one thing that Disneyland is especially known for is innovative and interesting food and drinks, and Galaxy's Edge is no exception.

A number of culinary delicacies have been created for guests to try, but if you're a serious Star Wars fan, then none may be quite as important as the beverages you can find at the Batuu milk stand.

From the moment Luke Skywalker sat down to breakfast in A New Hope, fans have wondered exactly what that blue concoction he was drinking actually was. The food and beverage team at Disney Parks have come up with their best approximation of that, as well as the green liquid Luke Skywalker pulled right from the source in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The two drinks don't have special names. They're known simply as "blue milk" and "green milk" and are both available in a single place inside Galaxy's Edge, a location known simply as the milk stand. Both types of milk go for $7.99, so they're not cheap drinks, to be sure, but that's honestly pretty standard for a non-alcoholic specialty beverage at Disneyland.

What Exactly Is Blue Milk And Green Milk?

So, first and foremost, the most important thing to know is that neither of these drinks is technically milk. Both are beverages with a rice and coconut base rather than coming from any form of actual dairy. This is done largely to simply allow more people to enjoy the drinks. Both of them are vegan, so everybody from vegetarians to the simply lactose intolerant can still have a glass.

The drinks also are not quite the same consistency as milk. Both are closer to a milkshake than milk, or, since both have strong fruit flavors, maybe calling them a smoothie is more accurate. Either way, pouring blue milk on your morning breakfast cereal wouldn't simply change the color of your breakfast, but everything about the meal.

Blue Milk

Starting with the iconic blue milk made famous in Star Wars: A New Hope, this icy cold beverage is going to hit all your buttons, especially if you're a fan of tropical fruits. It's got flavors of pineapple and dragonfruit, but also watermelon. If you're looking for something cold and refreshing to drink on a hot day in Southern CA and there will be a lot of those this summer, or on Batuu, the blue milk is probably going to be much more your speed.

My guess is that the blue milk will be the favorite among most guests as it's something of a safer choice. The other option is a bit more adventurous.

Green Milk

Green milk is also very much a fruit smoothie, though the fruits here are quite different. The green option is very heavy in the citrus flavors -- think oranges and grapefruits above all. There's a bit of tropical fruit here as well as I think there's passion fruit also included.

This could have made the green milk the more popular choice overall, but green milk has a bit of a twist. In addition to these citrus flavors, there's also a strong element that I can only describe as floral tasting. It comes in at the back of the sip and is very strong. Because of this, it's the flavor that is still lingering after you swallow, making the green milk the more unique taste of the two.

This will be the determining factor in which of the two you like better. These floral notes are either going to appeal to you or they're going to turn you off in a big way.

So Which Is Better?

Going in I sort of assumed this would be an easy enough question to answer, but as it turns out, not so much.

Personally, I have to say I actually enjoyed the green milk more. I found the floral notes of the beverage to be quite interesting and unexpected and I love any food or drink that combines flavors I like in unique and interesting ways.

Having said that, it seems, based on those who have given both milks a try at Galaxy's Edge, that I'm very much in the minority. Odds are you will prefer the blue milk over the green. I can totally see that many might not go for the floral component of the green milk. It's not the first flavor you think of when you think "ice cold fruit smoothie."

The best comparison that I can come up with comes from the world of beer. What's often referred to as a "west coast IPA" is a beer that is usually heavy in hops and thus is more bitter. It certainly has a strong flavor to it, but it's one that doesn't appeal to everybody.

Green milk isn't bitter, but it has a strong flavor in the same way. You're either going to like the taste or you're going to hand the glass to your friend and see if they want to finish it.

Blue milk is more like your session IPA. Its flavors are smoother and more balanced. It's easier to drink. It's designed specifically to appeal to a wider variety of palettes.

If you're going to be checking out Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and you want to try something at the milk stand, my recommendation is go with the blue milk first. If you're there with a group of friends, consider getting one green milk among the group so that everybody can at least give it a try. There's a decent chance somebody will like it enough that it won't go to waste, and if everybody loves it, you can always get more.

You can still check out Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge now by booking a stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel, everybody booked in the room will get access to a four hour visit to Batuu. Starting June 24, no reservations will be required.

The Insane Number Of Movies Netflix Wants To Release Next Year

The Insane Number Of Movies Netflix Wants To Release Next Year

Netflix has been ramping up its original productions unit for some time and now it looks as if next year will be no exception. Overall, Netflix plans to produce 90 film releases in 2019. Yes, 90.

A good chunk of those 90 films should be in the traditional live action film model. There are 55 original films, all with various budgets, that will be coming out next year that will be what the average moviegoer considers to be regular films. Secondly, Netflix has also increased its documentary and animated film output, which is where the other 45 titles will come in.

As the NY Times noted in its writeup, that number may not seem too insane until you consider the output of the other major studios. Universal is cited as an example for comparison and Universal produced 30 movies in 2019. In percentage terms, 30 movies is far fewer than 90 movies.

A day ago, a study seemingly confirmed that the moviegoing public who consumes Netflix is also likely to head to movie theaters. In this environment, seemingly both theatrical releases and Netflix releases could thrive. Competition may not be as fierce as it may seem or may have seemed when Netflix got into the movie game.

Regardless, Netflix has more big productions starting to roll out in 2019. We've been hearing about Martin Scorsese's The Irishman for some time, but there are also movies coming from the likes of Steven Soderbergh and Michael Bay.

The new offerings should run the gamut in terms of genre and premise.

In fact, as evidenced above there are different groups, including the groups run by Scott Stuber that encompass the 55 original films previously listed. One group is called the "Originals," which have relatively large budgets between $20 million and $200 million. The Irishman's budget, for example has previously been estimated at $140 million.

The other 35 films are listed as "indies." Traditionally when many of us think of indies, we may think of movies trying to be awards contenders, but Netflix has also delved into original movies that are closer to the content Hallmark or Lifetime are putting out, including stuff like The Princess Switch.

Netflix also is able to save some money in the budget department by not advertising in the traditional ways that big budget movies at the box office have. Instead, the subscription streaming company markets on its own platform and can market an older product for years, provided it's a good fit for the user.

Netflix has been creating new content for years now, but getting into the film game is still a whole lot newer for the company than getting into TV productions. Clearly the subscription streaming service has some good talent in its lineup heading into 2019 and we'll have to wait and see if any of those flicks end up competing (or being able to compete) in the big awards races.

Take a look at what's heading to Netflix with our full schedule.
