Marvel Has Given The First Three Phases Of The MCU An Epic Name

In just over a month’s time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 will come to an end in Avengers: Endgame. More than closing out Phase 3 though, Endgame also puts a cap on the first eleven years of the MCU, a journey that consists of three Phases and twenty-one films. We’ve been told that Avengers: Endgame represents a culmination; the end of the book and narrative that began with Iron Man. Now, as we race towards its climactic conclusion, we finally know what it’s called. And it is epic.

According to Empire Magazine, Kevin Feige has revealed that the first three phases of the MCU are called The Infinity Saga.

Yup, that is an appropriately epic and fitting name for the 21-film journey we have been on since 2008. It’s a super cool name that is going to look awesome emblazoned on a massive and expensive Blu-ray box set one day. Considering that we didn’t even know that these first three phases would have a specific name (think of all the speculation we missed out on!) beyond just Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, it is a pleasant surprise as well.

Marvel has clearly taken a page out of corporate brother Lucasfilm’s book with this name. Like ‘The Skywalker Saga’, the word ‘saga’ just conveys an extra level of grandiosity and has an epic quality to it, befitting a heroic tale, vast in scope and long in telling. Series or chronicle doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. The only thing that comes close is ‘cycle’ which is what George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series is often referred to as.

Sometimes the most obvious answers are the right ones and The Infinity Saga frankly sounds like the most obvious and appropriate name for the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date.

The Tesseract, which contained the Space Stone, was introduced all the way back in Phase 1 in Captain America: The First Avenger and the Infinity Gauntlet (albeit a replica) first appeared in Thor. Thanos first appeared in the end-credits scene of The Avengers and he and the Infinity Stones have acted like a specter hanging over everything and propelling the plot ever since. That the Infinity Saga built to the Avengers: Infinity War shows that this name is the right one.

I’m honestly not sure what the MCU’s first three Phases would be called other than The Infinity Saga. The Stan Lee Saga would honor the man who Marvel owes so much to and left such a legacy in the films, but it wouldn’t speak to the story. The only other choice would have been The Avengers Saga, but we may get more Avengers movies after Endgame, so that wouldn’t hold as much weight.

There are more stories yet to come in the MCU, and Endgame is a demarcation line between what came before and what comes after. What’s interesting about finding out this name is that if The Infinity Saga is book 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what’s book 2?

We know so little about Phase 4 (if it’s even called that) that it’s difficult to make an educated guess at this point. The New Avengers Saga? The Secret Invasion Saga? The Galactus Saga? Or, wishful thinking here as this may be more book 3 material but The Mutant Saga? We probably won’t know for some time, maybe in another 21 films, but it’s fun to think about.

How Russell Crowe And Nicole Kidman Seriously Inspired Joel Edgerton Making Boy Erased

Joel Edgerton is really just starting to forge his way into the directing world -- his debut, The Gift, released in 2015 -- but his experience in the acting world is deep. The 44-year-old Australian has been doing movies and television since the mid-90s, and has delivered some truly awesome performances in that time. At the same time, though, he is finding that the new enterprise has very much started to inform the old one, particularly with his experience working with Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman making his new movie, Boy Erased. He recently told me,

Both of them are masters, obviously, at what they do, and it's really interesting getting inside a room with them. Because I've watched them in many movies, and the difference was now I had a front row seat to watch how they put their performances together over many takes; I guess having some kind of inside/outside sense of their process. And there's a specificity to them. A number of occasions just having simple conversations about a simple line of dialogue, or a word, and its value - whether it was necessary, whether it was worth taking away. That kind of specificity is one of the marks of what I think a truly intelligent actor is.

The domestic press junket for Boy Erased was earlier this week in Los Angeles, and I had the immense pleasure of sitting down one-on-one with Joel Edgerton for an extensive discussion about his sophomore directorial effort (which he also wrote and produced). I specifically brought up his work with Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman -- also Australian natives -- and inquired about what he took away from the experience. The actor-cum-filmmaker was clearly impressed with his stars' contributions, and expressed a real appreciation for the depth of their passion.

According to Joel Edgerton, both Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman examined every word in the script that he wrote for Boy Erased, based on the memoir of the same name by Garrard Conley. They grew to have a deep understanding of the roles they were playing, to the extent that they would be compelled to change the smallest of details to properly express themselves in their performance. Edgerton explained,

It says that they're thinking about everything that specifically if they're coming to you and going, 'This word can be excised,' or, 'I feel like this is sort of off character.' You go, 'Well, if they're thinking that carefully about just that line, they're thinking about the whole piece that way.' I just enjoyed the conversations about specificity, and Russell in particular, given the religious aspects really kind of built his own sermons through his research about the real man, and his specificity was also so clear it when it came to the use of props and costumes. It wasn't just about his face on screen. And same with Nicole.

In Boy Erased, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman play Marshall and Nancy Eamons, devoted parents of their college-aged son, Jared (Lucas Hedges). The story begins with Jared coming to terms with his sexuality, realizing that he is gay, but unfortunately it's not a situation that mom and dad handle well. They are a deeply religious family, Marshall being a preacher at the local church, and they believe that it's a lifestyle choice. In response the decision is made to send Jared to a gay conversion program, where an attempt is made to make the young man someone he isn't, and we learn more about him through flashbacks guided by his introspection.

Both Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman give powerhouse performances in the movie, and their deep character work paid off. I asked Joel Edgerton directly if his work with the two stars is going to influence the way that he personally approaches his roles in the future, and his immediate response was, "Definitely." He makes a point of using his directorial experiences to understand the way other performers think and work, and ultimately applies it to himself:

I learn stuff about actors every time I go to work, whether I'm working alongside them, whether I'm watching it as a director. It's interesting just thinking about it. It's all things. It's not just the words. It's how you look, but it's beyond just how you look; it's how you move. It's what energy you have. There are so many different components that make different actors great.

Continuing his thought, Edgerton noted that part of what he's come to understand is that no two actors are exactly the same. He explained that age and experience plays a certain factor, but also that the good ones can evolve their work overtime. Of course, this also means that each one needs to be treated differently by their director, and that's another learning curve as he's continued his time behind the camera. Said the filmmaker,

Some people are also just blessed with having an understanding instinctively of how to perform. That really gets a lot of young people by. And then, you know, there's a certain craft aspect... Every actor is a different animal. And the interesting thing about being a director is how to work with each individual. Have the right rhetoric within write dialogue. Know when they should be left alone, know when they need cradling.

On the latter front, it certainly seems like Joel Edgerton is learning fast, as the director/writer/producer/actor is now definitely two-for-two in terms of the titles he's brought from inception to final cut. He's proving to be an exciting voice behind the lens and it's an extra bonus that it likely means that his acting chops are only going to get even better.

Boy Erased, which co-stars Michael "Flea" Balzary, Troye Sivan, Madelyn Cline, and Emily Hinkler, is arriving in theaters this weekend -- set for limited release this Friday, November 2nd. Dan Aykroyd Teases The New Ghostbusters Will Be ‘Quite Scary’

It’s a famous line from the original Ghostbusters theme song. “I ain’t afraid of no ghost.” Because the ghosts in Ghostbusters, both the original and it sequel, were never meant to be scary. The guys were making comedies that happened to involve the supernatural, not horror thrillers with a few jokes mixed in. But with a new Ghostbusters story potentially coming to theaters, chills and scares may be on the menu.

Dan Aykroyd, an OG Ghostbuster, was out promoting his vodka and answering Ghostbusters questions for The Canadian Press (via 660citynews.com). When asked about the script that Jason Reitman has produced for a possible Ghostbusters sequel, Aykroyd opened up a little and explained:

Ivan Reitman’s son Jason has written a beautiful script, I can’t say too much about it but it’s going to get made and hopefully there’ll be some familiar faces. … It’s so different from even the first and second [movies]. This just takes it to a new generation and a new direction that is so warm, heartfelt and, indeed, quite scary when you confront some of the issues that are being discussed.

The “quite scary” nod got us excited, because that would be a new direction for the franchise, and also for Jason Reitman as a director. Yes, he’s the son of the original director, Ivan Reitman. But nothing on Jason’s resume suggests that he’d be willing to tackle horror – though that doesn’t mean that he’s not ready to give it a try.

Also, with the reported casting of both Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon, the new movie might be leaning into a Stranger Things vibe, which taps into nostalgia by embracing ‘80s culture, but isn’t afraid to turn up the thrills when the story calls for it.

That first tease that Reitman filmed for this new Ghostbusters certainly set that mood:

But we don’t know a whole lot of details beyond that teaser, as the movie hasn’t yet gone into production. It is believed that the original stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson will return for this new movie, but we don’t know how they will be used in the story.

If Dan Aykroyd gets his way, however, the new movie will be the start of several new Ghostbusters stories, as he goes on to say in the interview:

I’ve written Ghostbusters High, where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years…. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of him immediately for that. It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers! … We have other stuff after the Jason Reitman-helmed movie. We have at least one or two other concepts for the Ghostbusters and then we’ll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we’ve done up to that point.

Of course, those plans stop if the new movie can’t get the franchise back off of the ground. If the Paul Feig movie caught fire, the franchise could have continued in that direction. But for now, we are sitting back and anticipating a new Ghostbusters movie from Jason Reitman on July 10, 2020. Will you check it out?

Birds Of Prey Has Found Its Renee Montoya

After initially being just of one the many projects in development for the DC Extended Universe, Birds of Prey has now graduated to being a sure thing. Back in April, g was hired to direct the picture, and last week it was announced that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have been cast to play Huntress and Black Canary, respectively, joining Margot Robbie reprising Harley Quinn. But this was just the beginning of the Birds of Prey casting news, and word's just come in that Academy Award-nominated actress Rosie Perez has been cast to play Detective Renee Montoya.

This latest casting update comes from The Wrap, which reports that Rosie Perez is the fourth actor to be added to Birds of Prey. Like her comic book counterpart, she will be a detective with the Gotham City Police Department, and she'll be teaming up with the other heroines to battle the forces of evil. Perez is arguably best known for her performance as Carla Rodrigo in 1992's Fearless, which netted her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and her other notable credits include Do The Right Thing, White Men Can't Jump, The 24 Hour Woman and being a co-host on The View.

Renee Montoya is one of the few comic book characters who debuted in a different medium before being brought to the printed page, as she was created for Batman: The Animated Series and returned for The New Batman Adventures. In the comics, Renee is one of the DC universe's most prominent gay characters, and while she is also a GCPD detective, in the immediate years preceding the New 52 reboot, she became the second Question, inheriting the identity from Vic Sage. Whether or not Rosie Perez's version of Renee becomes the Question in Birds of Prey or sticking strictly to police work remains to be seen. Renee has also shown up in Gotham, Batman: Bad Blood and Batman: The Telltale Series.

No specific plot details for Birds of Prey have been revealed yet, but reportedly the leading heroines will be clashing with Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, one of the most powerful crime bosses in Gotham City. Even if she doesn't get her superhero on during the movie, Renee Montoya is one of Gotham's best detectives and knows how to handle herself in a fight, so she'll be a great ally to the more colorfully-dressed protagonists. With Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya covered, that leaves Cassandra Cain as the final leading lady left to be cast in Birds of Prey. In this movie, however, she will reportedly be a young girl rather than a teenager/young adult as she's usually depicted.

Shazam! Producer Thinks James Gunn Is Uniting DC And Marvel Fans

If you're a fan of comic book movies and the work of James Gunn, then everything is coming up roses. The director, who had taken over the new Suicide Squad movie following his unceremonious departure from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now on board both films. Whichever side of the comic book divide you're on, you've got a potentially great movie on the way. Of course, the entire situation tends to blur the line between Marvel and DC, and some think that's a wonderful thing. And you know what I love about James directing for both Marvel and DC is he has always espoused the view that that which unites comic book and superhero lovers is much greater than that which divides us. Because, there’s always been this Marvel/DC rivalry, which he has said, and I agree, is absurd. There’s room for everybody and certainly that which unites us all is far greater than that which divides us, so hopefully they’ll see that you can be both a Marvel and a DC fan and the world won’t spin off its axis.

Marvel and DC have always been in competition, it's the nature of business, but that competition has seemingly moved beyond the sales charts and resulted in many fans picking a side. Whether you're a comic book reader or simply a viewer of the big screen adaptations, it seems that many support one set of stories and characters over the other simply because of which logo is attached.

Even before James Gunn became attached as a director of movies from both Marvel and DC, as Peter Safran tells JoBlo, he had spoken out frequently on Twitter about the fact that he felt that the line drawn in the sand between the two comic publishers was arbitrary and irrelevant. There's no reason that people can't be fans of both sides and all the great superhero characters that they have to offer.

As the most high profile name to work both sides of the fence so far, one certainly has to wonder if James Gunn has opened the floodgates. Could we see more and more people, on both sides of the camera, possibly work with both Marvel and DC more often? For the most part, it has seemed that getting cast in a major role for one cinematic universe has made the other one off limits. Zachary Levi had a small role in the Thor franchise but was killed off before he became Shazam! for DC.

James Gunn will go to work on The Suicide Squad first, with production expected to start later this year. After that, he'll return to Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Will James Gunn become the great peacemaker of our time and bring DC and Marvel fans together? We can only hope.

What The Live-Action Aladdin Does Better Than The Original

When we first caught a glimpse of Disney’s double take at Aladdin, I would have thought only wishes out of a magic lamp would have lead us here. Since the movie was released, many Disney fans have expressed their love for the House of Mouse’s latest live-action remake. As someone who has grown quite weary of Mouse House's attempts to revisit its animated classics, I found it to be a nice surprise how much I enjoyed it!

There are quite a few aspects to the new Aladdin that make it a win for the studio besides all the money it’s already making. Hear me out ‘die hards’: parts of the 2019 film actually tell the story better than the classic animated movie we’ve loved and cherished over the past 27 years… even though this movie is clearly borrowing from the animated version. Time to break them down:

Jasmine Is An Empowering Princess

Disney Princesses have always served as role models for the young girls they are catered to, and Jasmine was certainly a ‘90s icon. From her fashion sense to her badass tiger pet Rajah, and her “screw the system” mentality, she was one high quality princesses at the time. When you compare her company, of course, which includes a mermaid trading in her life for a man she met yesterday and a bookworm who fell in love with her captor.

No offense cartoon Jaz, but Naomi Scott’s Jasmine left me speechless. Not only does she finally get her own song (that was kept in the movie this time), but it’s a powerful one. It’s the best part of the movie. The new Aladdin uses the original story to benefit a more modern and improved take on the character. Instead of feeling helpless about her suitors because she’s looking for true love - her central problem is that she is the perfect person to rule Agrabah. The trouble is misogyny is stopping her from achieving her dreams.

How crazy relatable is this to women!?!?! To feel society’s grasp on your place in the world and to actively push against it. I assure you, just about every woman in the world has dealt with this. 2019’s Aladdin updates Jasmine in the best way and heightens her character for the better. That by itself makes it a worthy remake. But let’s keep going!

The Music Better Reflects The Aladdin Story

Aladdin’s original soundtrack and score definitely still hold up, and the new album won’t replace Alan Menken’s first version. However, the new film does do something interesting with the music: it really goes for it when expressing the flavor of the cultures being depicted on screen. Even if it may look like a slight alteration to some, it makes a world of difference for those with personal roots in the region.

The music does go back and forth between borrowing from Indian and Arab influences, but this choice is apparently a deliberate choice to make the fictional city of Agrabah be a meeting point of Asian cultures as it’s an important trading port. Disney’s many animated classics have pulled from famous folktales from all around the world for decades. It's when they delve into the identities of the cultures that they really work the best (think Moana and Coco) and this Aladdin is no exception.

The use of traditional instruments like oud and doumbeks, such as in the scene-setting "Arabian Nights" opening, shows a attention to detail and greater celebration of culture that was original lacked. The music sequences also benefits from the live-action too! Seeing "Prince Ali" is effectively grand and watching Aladdin and Jasmine's thrilling ride on the magic carpet ride is captivating to see the actors express.

It’s Not Just The Genie Show

When we think back to the original Aladdin, it’s all about Robin Williams’ performance. That’s not to say there aren’t some other great ones to go around from the cast. But it doesn’t end up coming off as an “ensemble” musical or comedy, because Robin’s Genie is just so memorably good. This movie is an ensemble musical comedy!

There’s a balanced role for all the key characters to play, and Aladdin and Jasmine (which the story is really supposed to be about) have a story arc that’s just as interesting as Will Smith’s Genie performance is. The cast compliment one another and feed off one another in this version, and the movie is better for it. If Guy Ritchie had gone into it leaning on Will Smith to run the show, it would not have worked and it’s great that they didn’t try that approach.

This Aladdin offers some funny improv moments between the actors. These live-action remakes can feel stuffy and by the book, but the addition of this loosens up the audience. There’s also a real chemistry and energy between the cast that the original didn't have (mainly because of the animation). These elements make the new Aladdin a crowd pleaser! It stops being about the legacy of these characters and more about living in each scene with this approach.

The Message Shimmers Brighter

The original Aladdin’s message can be found in a key scene that’s stuck with me since childhood. It’s right before Aladdin is going to show Jasmine a whole new world and is struggling with how to talk to her. Genie gives him two pieces of advice “tell her the truth” and “bee yourself” (yes, as he’s disguised as a bee).

The new Aladdin really shows us this message and it has a better payoff. We get to see Aladdin and Jasmine’s chemistry as a couple more before he turns into Aladdin, so seeing how off his game he is as the Prince really hits home. The awkwardness Aladdin faces as he tries to woo her as a prince is more painfully obvious through the new scenes and has viewers rooting for them more intently. It makes many of us want to scream these mantras at the screen.

Genie is also a bit wiser this time around and Aladdin has more responsibility for his actions. In the original, he has his sights set on Jasmine and then once he gets her he has to somehow figure out how to be Sultan… that’s concerning! In the new version, he’s the reason and supporter that leads to Jasmine and her father coming to the decision that she should rule. This ending matters a lot more and makes the titular character earn his top billing!

I’m not saying one Aladdin movie is better than the other. The animated version will always have a special place in many of our hearts and is a monumental achievement for the studio. This remake did make some good choices that improved upon what we’ve seen already from the story and it was a satisfying take on a classic that has seldom been done.
