What Sophie Turner Loved Most About The Dark Phoenix Script

There's certainly been a lot of chatter about Dark Phoenix and not all of it has been good. The film had its release date pushed back a few times and the X-Men franchise was slapped with a giant question mark following the Disney-Fox deal. However, all that uncertainty took a break this week when the cast and filmmakers arrived at WonderCon 2019. It sounds like everything was fairly upbeat and positive, and though the road hasn't been easy, star Sophie Turner revealed the element of the script that attracted her to the film in the first place.

CinemaBlend had boots on the ground at WonderCon this week where our own Eric Eisenberg spoke to the producers and actors of Dark Phoenix. Of the many topics covered during the conversation, Sophie Turner, who stars as Jean Grey, spoke of what she loved about the Dark Phoenix script. Not only was the role unique in that Jean Grey is technically both the protagonist and antagonist, but it's the X-Women who lead the show this time.

I think what I loved was the fact that, from a female standpoint, some of the most powerful characters in this movie are women. The lead of the movie is a female and she's not only the protagonist but also the antagonist. I loved the concept of that, so that really excited me.

Blockbusters are putting more and more female characters into the spotlight to so far tremendous results. Captain Marvel is the highest grossing movie of the year right now and other successful franchises like Stars Wars, Wonder Woman, and The Hunger Games are led by women. Dark Phoenix is continuing the trend of putting women front and center, such as Jean Grey, Mystique, Storm, and Jessica Chastain's mysterious Smith.

During the Dark Phoenix panel at WonderCon, new footage was shown that reportedly went well received by the audience. One moment that got loud cheers was when Mystique, after a tense argument with Charles Xavier, said that it's the women on the team who are often taking the biggest risks, that he should rename them the X-Women.

Obviously, more diversity in pop culture is a great thing and it sounds like Dark Phoenix will be contributing its share of strong characters when it arrives later this summer.

Bond 25 Production Suspended After Daniel Craig Suffers Injury

Production on the as-yet-untitled James Bond 25 has reached a standstill as lead actor Daniel Craig apparently has injured himself badly on set and needs time to recover.

Daniel Craig and the rest of the cast and crew for Bond 25 were in Jamaica filming scenes for the upcoming 007 thriller, due to reach theaters in 2020. According to The Sun, Craig slipped while running in his signature Bond suit, and he fell awkwardly, causing himself an enormous amount of pain. It’s believed that Craig injured his ankle while running, and the actor was flown to the States for X-rays to determine the extent of the damage.

According to the report, Daniel Craig was filming one of his last scenes in Jamaica, with filming set to resume in London’s Pinewood Studios afterward. For the time being, that schedule has been put on hold as the crew decides what to do next. The Sun notes that production bosses hope that Craig’s injury doesn’t cause a long delay.

Daniel Craig has been recognized as the more physical James Bond from the moment he joined the franchise in 2006’s Casino Royale, and he has endured his fair share of bumps, bruises and bodily harms as a result of playing 007. As is documented in The Sun, Craig lost two teeth after absorbing a blow to the face while filming his first-ever stunt scene as 007.

Since then, Craig also has suffered a muscle tear while filming Quantum of Solace (during which he also sliced off the tip of a finger), and sustained a serious knee injury while filming a fight scene for Spectre, which caused production to shut down for weeks.

Who is on set telling Daniel Craig to slow it down a tad? Maybe the studio needs to hire a coach who encourages Craig to give the stunt guy more work? Granted, without Craig in the role, we wouldn’t get memorable action set pieces like this:

But does Daniel Craig still feel like this physical pain is worth it? The 51-year-old actor hemmed and hawed about returning to 007 in the press, leading to rampant speculation that he’d be replaced by an alternate Bond. Even now though it hasn’t been officially stated by anyone, many seem to believe that Bond 25 will be Craig’s final turn in the tuxedo, and on-set injuries probably help convince him to hang it up.

Cary Fukunaga directs Bond 25, with a story we know very little about. The cast was in Jamaica to announce the start of production, knowing that the location has a lot of personal and professional connections to author Ian Fleming and the Bond movie series, as a whole.

Marvel Asked For Loki To Be 'A Villain As Good As Magneto,' Thor Writer Reveals

One of the strongest criticisms of the MCU for a long time was that it had a villain problem. Despite producing iconic heroes left and right, Marvel Studios could never quite create a memorable villain. During the early phases of the MCU, the notable exception was Loki, who would be labeled as Marvel's best villain before he finally got some competition. Apparently, Marvel knew early on that it had to nail Loki, and executives told Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz that his top priority was making Loki as good a villain as Magneto.

Way back in the early days of of the MCU, Marvel Studios knew that it was building up to The Avengers. As such, studio execs had the idea that Loki would the villain of that film, but they were also aware that they weren't super great with making good villains. Iron Monger, Whiplash, and the Abomination were forgotten as soon as people left the theater.

So, if Loki had to be their Big Bad of Phase One, they needed to get it right. Here's what the studio told Zack Stentz when he was writing the screenplay for Thor.

It's a complicated issue because we had a very clear mandate when we were writing Thor. They already knew that they were building towards The Avengers and they already had the notion that Loki was going to be the villain. They knew that their villains thus far in the MCU had been a bit underwhelming, and they said -- one of the executives literally said, 'Look, if you fail at everything else, give us a villain as good as Magneto in Loki.' We need someone at that level because that’s going to be our villain for The Avengers.

Back in 2011, The Dark Knight's Joker was the villain to beat, but before that film came along, Magneto was probably the best modern day comic book movie villain. He appeared in every X-Men movie, he had cool powers, and the audience could sympathize with his rationale because of his sad backstory.

Loki certainly has the audience's sympathy. Zack Stentz told The Fanboy Podcast that while writing the character, he knew that one of the most important things for making Loki a great villain is that he had to be relatable.

We always put a lot of effort into our villains, but in this case we really worked hard giving Loki an interesting story and making him sympathetic at the same time as he's doing these terrible things.

I would say that Zack Stentz and his fellow Thor writers certainly gave Marvel what they wanted. Loki went on to become a huge hit with fans, and even after all these years he's still in the Top Five of MCU villains. Of course, a lot of the credit also goes to Tom Hiddleston for his performance as the character.

Loki's movie future was made unclear by Avengers: Endgame, but the character will be the star of his very own mini-series on Disney+, which doesn't have a release date yet. Magneto, currently played by Michael Fassbender, will be seen on screen again soon in Dark Phoenix, which opens in theaters July 7.

Wait, Is Marvel Developing A Dark Avengers Movie?

One of the reasons the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been so successful is the franchise explores so many different corners rather than just rehashes the same kind of material time and time again. Take this year: Black Panther brought us to the wondrous nation of Wakanda, Avengers: Infinity War saw explosive action unfolding on Earth and in other corners of the galaxy, and Ant-Man and the Wasp opted to tell a smaller (figuratively and literally), yet still compelling story. We're still piecing together what will comprise the Phase 4 slate of films, but there's no shortage of content to be adapted, and supposedly Marvel has considered having Dark Avengers be one of these movies.

According to That Hashtag Show, Marvel has developed and competed a script for a Dark Avengers movie, based on the team created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato following the "Secret Invasion" event. Just to be clear, assuming this report is true, this does not necessarily mean that a Dark Avengers movie is now on the way. Marvel commissions a lot of scripts, and there's no way to tell if Dark Avengers is one of the projects being prioritized or if it's lower down in the pile. Still, the fact that Marvel Studios is willing to put a villainous group of characters in the spotlight is fascinating, as until now, we've only been following tried-and-true heroes as the main protagonists (although I suppose an argument could be made for Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War).

In the aftermath of "Secret Invasion," Norman Osborn, who restored goodwill with the public by killing the Skrull queen, became the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., reformed it into H.A.M.M.E.R. and formed a new Avengers team on behalf of the U.S. government. But as the name implies, there were some bad seeds included in the Dark Avengers. Along with Osborn wearing redesigned Iron Man armor and calling himself Iron Patriot, the team's lineup included Mac Gargan, a.k.a. Scorpion, disguised as Spider-Man and enhanced by the Venom symbiote; Karla Sofen, a.k.a. Moonstone, disguised as Ms. Marvel; Bullseye disguised as Hawkeye; Daken disguised as Wolverine, the Noh-Varr Captain Marvel, Ares (yes, the Greek god of war Ares) and The Sentry. The Dark Avengers went on various missions and, needless to say, were much sketchier than the traditional Avengers teams, but the team eventually collapsed during the "Siege" event, although Osborn later formed a new iteration with all-new recruits.

As we've seen with Suicide Squad at DC and Venom in Sony's Spider-verse, there's room for villain-led movies to leave their unique marks on the superhero movie genre, so Dark Avengers could be a good opportunity for Marvel to delve into darker storytelling while still keeping inside the PG-13 confines. Personally, I go with a movie centered on the Thunderbolts, which typically follows reformed super villains using their talents to keep the world safe for a change. Who knows, maybe Marvel has a Thunderbolts script in its vault as well! Still, Dark Avengers is an intriguing prospect, and since Captain Marvel is introducing the Skrulls to the MCU, if that paves the way for a "Secret Invasion" adaptation, then Dark Avengers could easily follow after.

For right now, Marvel fans can look forward to Captain Marvel coming out on March 8, 2019, followed by Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home on May 3 and July 5 of the same year, respectively. As for what else is in development for the MCU, you can find that information in our handy guide.

Dark Phoenix’s Alexandra Shipp Doesn’t Want A Storm And Black Panther Romance In The MCU

Since the Disney-Fox merger finally became official as of a couple weeks ago, the mutants of X-Men could join the ranks of the MCU someday. Among the many potential pairings that have been suggested among fans between Avengers and X-Men is the striking romance between Black Panther and Storm but according to Dark Phoenix’s Storm actress, Alexandra Shipp, just because Disney can now make this happen, it doesn’t mean they should. In her words:

No! No, I don’t think Storm needs T’Challa, and I think she needs her own movie! It doesn’t have to be me, it just needs to be made. A woman does not need a man in order to give her validity and she has also been around longer than him.

Looks like Chadwick Boseman T’Challa is getting the cold shoulder from the X-Men actress, but for a valid, industry-forward reason. During a roundtable interview at WonderCon (via LRM Online,) Alexandra Shipp showed her distaste with her character’s future plotline to revolve around a romance between Storm and Black Panther because she thinks the weather-controlling hero needs her own movie. Though it should be noted that Black Panther has been around since 1966, and Storm debuted on the printed page nine years later.

It’s a tiresome plotline for the women of Marvel Comics to be consistently defined as the men in their lives, one that Captain Marvel recently made a conscience effort to steer away from. Alexandra Shipp previously echoed this statement last year when asked about her ideas for a spinoff for the powerful mutant character with these comments:

I just want there to be a message of ‘this woman doesn’t need a man.’ Just one movie where a woman doesn’t need a man, really.

However, with a the addition of the X-Men to the MCU imminent, T’Challa and Ororo’s romance would be an intriguing way for the two teams to intersect and form an alliance. In the comic books, the two meet as children when Storm flees Cairo following her parents’ deaths and comes across Wakanda. Storm rescues T’Challa from being kidnapped and a love story ignites. When they are older, the pair get married with both the X-Men and Avengers in attendance though it’s a short-lived union.

Six years into it, they were put at odds for the Avengers vs. X-Men event. When her team of mutants do damage to Wakanda, Black Panther blames her for it and they get a divorce. Seeing some of this drama play out would certainly be interesting as the hero becomes more prevalent in the MCU and the possibility of the addition of X-Men in the MCU will likely be tinkered with.

Us’ Evan Alex even recently volunteered himself up to play the son of Black Panther and Ororo in a Black Panther sequel to Vulture after playing the son to Black Panther’s M’Baku, Winston Duke, in the Jordan Peele horror film. To Alexandra Shipp, Storm’s addition to the MCU would just place her even farther into the background then she already is in the current X-Men franchise. Here’s what she said:

I would and I wouldn’t (like it), because Storm barely has anything to say as it is. I don’t know about you all (other actors) but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like fucking sasquatch.

The actress certainly isn’t afraid to tell it like it is but she’s right. As is, the upcoming Avengers: Endgame film looks so packed with characters that some will likely have one or two lines. Add in a crew of mutants and there would be so many heroes on the big screen that there just wouldn’t be a way to do each of the characters justice.

At WonderCon, 20 minutes of X-Men: Dark Phoenix footage was also showcased ahead of the film’s release on June 7. What do you think about Alexandra Shipp’s comments? Liam Neeson Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop Making Action Movies

There was a time when the name Liam Neeson was synonymous with high caliber dramatic films and period pieces, movies like Schindler's List, Michael Collins, and Rob Roy. However, these days Neeson spends much more time making "one man versus an army" action movies. His most recent in the genre was 2018's The Commuter, and now he's heading back in to make yet another with a new film called The Minuteman.

The new movie will see Liam Neeson as a retired Vietnam veteran who finds himself protecting a young boy that's being hunted by a cartel. The project will be directed by Robert Lorenz, a longtime producing partner of Clint Eastwood, who previously directed Eastwood's Trouble with the Curve.

Liam Neeson starred in Taken back in 2008 and the movie was such a huge hit that it not only spawned a pair of sequels, but also an entire new genre for Neeson to get involved in. While none of Neeson's action films have been able to quite replicate the success of the original taken, the films' modest budgets tend to mean that they do well enough at the box office even that if they don't break the bank, they are still considered successful.

Liam Neeson is 66 years old and as such he wouldn't necessarily be your first thought when it comes to major action heroes, but it really can't be argued that he''s able to make it work. He's somehow believable even at that age, something not everybody can pull off.

Even Neeson himself has said that eventually he feels like audiences will stop buying him in the role of action star at some point, but he seems to enjoy making the movies and that means he'll continue to make them until he stops getting the roles.

It should also be said that at least part of the reason Liam Neeson seems to be getting so many of these roles is that he has more success with them than others. Other aging actors from Mel Gibson to Sean Penn have tried their hands at the older action hero genre, but none have done as well with it as Neeson.

Details on The Minuteman are light from THR, but it seems certain that Liam Neeson will be beating the hell out of cartel members for most of the runtime. The lack of detail means it's impossible to tell if there's much to set this story apart or if it will be just another film like Non-Stop or A Walk Among the Tombstones, that have already been largely forgotten among the litany of action films Neeson has made in recent years.

Still, if you're a fan of action star Liam Neeson, the fact that another project is on the way is good news however you look at it.

First Terminator: Dark Fate Trailer: Sarah Connor Is Back With A Vengeance

The sci-fi genre has been rather popular since it's inception, but there are a few titles that stand out among the rest. Chief among those properties is James Cameron's Terminator, which has never really been far from theaters. The fan favorite installment of that franchise is Terminator 2, and the upcoming sequel Terminator: Dark Fate is a direct sequel to that movie.

Moviegoers have been seriously excited about Terminator: Dark Fate, particularly because it marks the return of actress Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. Luckily for us, the first trailer for Dark Fate has just been released, and it didn't disappoint. Check it out below.

Does anyone else have chills? The Terminator and Sarah Connor are both back, and the duo has quite the fight ahead of them.

The first Terminator: Dark Fate trailer opens with the trio of new characters. Mackenzie Davis' newcomer Grace is shown trying to keep Dani (Natalia Reyes) and her brother Miguel (Diego Boneta) away from danger. Specifically, the newest Terminator model, which is able to split itself into two separate entities. Played by Gabriel Luna, Dark Fate's big villain had a ton of screen time, and may be the most deadly version of the Terminator that we've seen in the franchise's long tenure.

Just when all seems lost, the trio of newcomers are saved. Not by Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800, but Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor. The decades since we saw her in Terminator 2 have hardened the iconic heroine even further, and she quickly disposes of the new villain through some heavy artillery. Namely, by shooting him with a massive gun, and then setting the bad guy aflame with another weapon.

While Sarah Connor may have saved Grace and Dani, smart money says taking down the new Terminator won't be quite that easy. Gabriel Luna's character has a ton of screen time in the first trailer, and may be even more deadly than Robert Patrick's T-1000 from T2. But Grace is also a new type of Terminator, one that identifies as a human. So clearly the Terminator canon is going to be going through some exciting changes.

Terminator fans may be hyped to see Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger back on screen together, but the most exciting scene from the first Dark Fate trailer comes in the final moments-- in an epic plane chase sequence. In what will no doubt be a thrilling experience in theaters, we see the Gabriel Luna's character crash into another plane, in an attempt to procure and/or murder Dani. We also see Grace dangling in the air, hanging onto debris that is slowly parachuting toward the ground.

Overall, the first Terminator: Dark Fate trailer was purposefully vague regarding its plot, as the film won't arrive until the fall. So we should expect more trailers to arrive in the coming months, revealing more about what to expect from the highly anticipated sequel.

After a cloud of uncertainty hung over the DCEU’s The Batman for years, Ben Affleck finally confirmed his departure from the role last month. The Matt Reeves project now moves forward with an official release date: June 25, 2021. Following the news, Zack Snyder posted a heartfelt goodbye to Affleck’s Batman with these words:

There was a time above.. A time before… there were perfect things… diamond absolutes. But things fall.. Things on earth. And what falls… is fallen. In the dream, it took me to the light. A beautiful lie, Best Batman ever. Thank you my friend for blessing me with that fucking glorious chin and an amazing heart.

How poetic! Ben Affleck was recently asked for a reaction to the Zack Snyder quote -- specifically the part about his chin -- while he was doing press for action drama Triple Frontier alongside co-star Oscar Isaac. Here’s what they said to Associated Press:

Ben Affleck: Zack's a funny guy, what can I say? [laughs]

Oscar Isaac: He's got a good chin too, doesn't he?

Ben Affleck: He does have a very nice chin! He shouldn't sell himself short.

Ben Affleck was tickled by Zack Snyder’s love letter to the actor’s superhero role, and Oscar Isaac also weighed in, observing the DCEU filmmaker’s also chiseled chin. I’d like to think Isaac is subtly campaigning to take over the role of Bruce Wayne by contributing to the flattery… he was rumored to be considered for a Batman role.

Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder worked closely together to bring a new Batman back to screen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League. After some initial backlash to Affleck’s casting, many fans embraced the actor as the Dark Knight, though some still voiced other issues with the direction of the DCEU.

After the overall negative reception to 2017’s Justice League, plans to continue making movies about the interconnected stories of the superhero team seemed to shift. That shift came just as Ben Affleck’s original plans to direct, produce, and star in a standalone Batman movie fell apart. Now War for the Planet of the Apes’ writer/director Matt Reeves is directing and writing The Batman script, and he's looking for a new star.

As the DCEU moves forward, the focus is on standalone origin stories and less on Zack Snyder’s vision -- with Shazam!, Joker and Birds of Prey on the way. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is said to be a "noir" Batman tale that will have the hero using his detective skills and featuring a Rogue’s Gallery of villains, though a new Bruce Wayne has not yet been cast.

Ben Affleck stars next in Netflix’s Triple Frontier, coming to the streaming service on March 13. The movie is about five former Special Forces operatives who reunite to plan a heist in South America; it also stars Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal.

No Big Deal, Just Dave Bautista Hanging Out With Groot At Disneyland

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a pretty big place. The behemoth shared universe has been producing blockbusters for a decade, with a ton of franchises launching since Iron Man first arrived to change the world of blockbuster production forever. One of the most popular properties in the MCU is James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, which stars a motley crew of creatures that cause intergalactic mischief and plenty of laughs. The colorful group of characters is one of the main reasons for the franchise's success, including Dave Bautista's Drax and Vin Diesel's anthropomorphic tree Groot. And now it looks like the Bautista has met Groot IRL, while visiting a Disney park. Check out the awesome photo below.

Seriously, how cool is that? It takes a lot to make Dave Bautista look like a small guy, but Groot is just the one to do it. Now if only he could learn a few more words.

This photo comes from Dave Bautista's personal Instagram page, showing that the wrestler turned actor has recently visited a Disneyland. And while Disneyland may be most closely associated with characters like Mickey Mouse, there are also plenty of attractions and characters for the more nerd-minded visitors. Because the House of Mouse owns both Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, characters like Groot and Star-Lord have officially made their way into the parks. The Groot costume is pretty damn impressive, as it's massive headpiece allows him to tower those lucky enough to snag a pic with the Guardian.

In addition to being characters in the parks, the Guardians have also been given an attraction of their own. Disneyland's classic Tower of Terror was recently replaced by Guardians of the Galaxy -- Mission: Breakout!, featuring all the beloved characters and settings from James Gunn's intergalactic franchise. The ride sees Rocket Raccoon recruit riders to help him break the rest of the Guardians out of The Collector's lair, including Dave Bautista's Drax The Destroyer.

It should be interesting to see how the Guardian characters in Disney's parks change as more movies are released. The Groot pictured with Dave Bautista is the version from the original film, where the character was somewhere in his early 20s. But when Groot sacrificed himself to save the rest of the team, he perished and was reborn as a small sapling. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 introduced us to the adorable baby Groot, who captured everyone's hearts. And the sequel's ending introduced us to teenage Groot, who will be the version of the hero that pops up in Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps that new version of the character will also be one that Disneyland patrons can meet and take photos with, including Dave Bautista himself.

Both Dave Bautista's Drax The Destroyer and Vin Diesel's Groot will return to the MCU when Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on May 4th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
