How Clark Gregg Originally Found Out He'd Be In More Than Iron Man Movies In The MCU

How Clark Gregg Originally Found Out He'd Be In More Than Iron Man Movies In The MCU
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson in Iron Man 2

While Clark Gregg's agent Phil Coulson doesn't have superpowers, the character is as loved by fans as any of the Avengers. Between his appearance in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and the ongoing Agents of SHIELD TV series, he's become a significant part of the story. However, if it was always the plan for Coulson to become a recurring part of the MCU, somebody forgot to tell Clark Gregg, as he didn't know his role was growing until the middle of filming Iron Man 2. According to Gregg...

During one of those [Iron Man 2] scenes they said, ‘Oh Tony, you’ve got to tell him he’s going to New Mexico.’ Finally, after I did a couple of takes, because I was obedient and happy to be there, I was like, ‘One question: What’s in New Mexico?’ And they said, ‘Oh, Thor! You’re going to be the one to find his hammer. Are you free?’ And I was like, ‘Oh shit, I’m going to get free!’

Clark Gregg made his debut as Agent Phil Coulson in the original Iron Man, back when the only hint that there was ever going to be anything like the MCU came in a post-credits sequence back when people didn't know they needed to stay through the credits. He was Tony Stark's liaison with SHIELD.

He returned for Iron Man 2 and likely just assumed that he'd just be a small part of whatever shenanigans Tony Stark got up to. The Incredible Hulk was the only other Marvel movie at that point and while Robert Downey Jr. did appear in a post credits sequence of his own, connecting the stories, it still wasn't clear just how well the MCU idea would work. Hulk wasn't a hit like Iron Man had been.

It's clear from the way Clark Gregg talks to Polygon that he's as much a fan of the Marvel movies as he is happy to be a part of them. Of course he would get excited about the chance to be in Thor as well as the Iron Man movies. I like how it was just sort of planned to have Clark Gregg appear in the movie and he was asked if he was free after telling him he was going. Based on his response, it was probably assumed he would make himself available if he made it clear how happy he was to be making the movies.

His fate in The Avengers was probably somewhat disappointing to him, though Gregg says he was humbled by the outpouring of support from fans who wanted to find a way to bring him back. One theory was that dead Coulson could have been a Skrull. Now, Gregg is back on the big screen in the MCU in the 90s prequel Captain Marvel which opens on Friday, and so are the Skrulls. Is Coulson actually a Skrull? No spoilers.

Melissa McCarthy Says Female Comedy Got Off Track For A While

Melissa McCarthy Says Female Comedy Got Off Track For A While

With the amount of comedy hits Melissa McCarthy has lead through the past few years, one can confidently say the actress is one of the most successful women in the genre right now. She's headlined one gut-busting movie after the other, including The Heat, Identity Thief, Spy and Tammy, and will have had three releases as this year comes to a close. McCarthy struck comedy gold with 2011's Bridesmaids, but the actress recently opened up about how her initial entry into the industry wasn't what she expected it to be. In her words:

I have to say, I watched Jane Curtin, and Gilda Radner, and Carol Burnett, and Madeline Kahn. I always felt like they paved the way. I think we got off track for a while where it was like, 'Hey, where are those parts that I grew up watching?

Throughout Melissa McCarthy's childhood, there were female comedians who defined their time and inspired McCarthy to become one herself. Carol Burnett gained prominence in the late '60s with her hilarious sketch comedy show The Carol Burnett Show, Gilda Radner became an iconic part of Saturday Night Live's early days and Madeline Kahn starred in Mel Brooks classics such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, among other endeavors. But when McCarthy entered the game, the genre was saturated by male comedians such as Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell.

In the interview on the AOL Build Series, Melissa McCarthy opened up about her slow start into comedy because of the lack of female roles out there. She recalled how Bridesmaids, written by her two friends Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, lead her to the super stardom she has today. McCarthy talked about the distinct difference she had with the two women asking her to just be weird and make the character her own instead of telling her exactly how to be. She felt it made all the difference to have women writing for women, making it the huge breakout success it was.

Before Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy was best known as Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls. The actress has since unleashed herself as a bonafide comedy actress, going for weirder, funnier and filthier with each release. In addition to her more classically McCarthy faire in Life of the Party, the comedian also starred in The Happytime Murders in late summer. However, the film starring vulgar Muppet-like characters was a bit of a box office bomb.

Next, Melissa McCarthy stars in a dark comedy based on the true story of best-selling celebrity biographer Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? The biopic, currently in limited release, has the actress showing off much more intensive acting chops. As McCarthy branches out to other genres and moves forward with her career, she will perhaps be known as one of the women who defined our time in female-led comedy.

Stan Lee Has A Few Marvel Cameos Left

Stan Lee Has A Few Marvel Cameos Left
Stan Lee in Ant-Man and the Wasp

Last November, longtime Marvel Comics heavyweight Stan Lee died at 95, and needless to say it was a heavy blow to the world of comic book media fandom. That said, it didn’t mark the last time we’d see him since months before his passing, Lee filmed/recorded several more of his trademark cameos, including his quick scene in Captain Marvel, which hit theaters this past weekend. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has now clarified that there are still a few Lee cameos left to be shown to the masses. When asked if Lee will appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Feige responded:

We'll see. We're heading-- We shot a couple of others, so we're coming up on the last of them, yes.

Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo said shortly after Stan Lee died that the comic book icon did shoot something for Endgame, as it was grouped together with various other MCU cameos that Lee shot during a short period. That said, it’s been unclear if Lee shot anything from Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Feige’s comment to ET is cagey in that regard. That said, an Endgame cameo is definitely on the table, and the fact that Feige said “the last of them” indicates that there’s more than just one cameo to look forward to.

Spider-Man: Far From Home filmed from last July to October in England, New York and several other countries. Stan Lee wasn’t able to travel much in his final years, but as with his other recent cameos, presumably it would have been easy enough to get him to a movie set in California where he could shoot something quick for Far From Home. Nothing’s official yet, but I’m guessing that it’s likelier than not that Lee will have some presence in the next live action Spider-Man movie, whether it’s on screen like all his other past MCU contributions or if he was only able to record a vocal cameo, like what he did for last December’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he played a shopkeeper who interacted with Miles Morales.

Stan Lee already had an extensive cameo resume even before the MCU launched with Iron Man in 2008, but in that particular franchise, he was a regular fixture, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 revealing that he was actually the same character who was keeping tabs on things around Earth and other areas of the galaxy on behalf of The Watchers. Sadly, all things must come to an end, and either Avengers: Endgame or Spider-Man: Far From Home will mark his last film appearance. That said, future MCU movies could take a cue from the Marvel Netflix shows and include a picture of Lee in tribute to the man who helped make Marvel the powerhouse company it is today.

Warning: SPOILERS for Captain Marvel are ahead!

Along with being his second or third-to-last MCU cameo, Captain Marvel was also special for Stan Lee because he was basically playing himself. While Carol Danvers was aboard a train searching for a disguised Skrull, she passed by Lee, who was practicing his lines for Mallrats, Kevin Smith’s second movie which, where Lee had a small, but important role. That movie came out in 1995, the same year Captain Marvel was set. Danvers studied Lee for a moment and then gave a smirk when she realized that he was 100% human.

But that wasn’t the only way that Captain Marvel paid tribute to Stan Lee. The Marvel Studios intro also replaced artwork and clips of its various superheroes with Stan Lee’s various cameos in this franchise over the last decade. Kevin Feige explained how shortly after Lee died, he and others at Marvel Studios were figuring out how to honor Lee and whether it should be something that’s part of a movie or released online. They eventually decided on the former, and rather than attach something “depressing at the end,” Feige settled on something “touching and rousing up front,” hence that heartwarming intro. Feige continued.

I know that, not specifically but in general, a celebration is what Stan always wanted as opposed to any sort of mournful event. So, it happened very, very quickly soon after we got the unfortunate news.. We put that together and our visual development department, led by Ryan Meinerding, illustrated all those illustrations of him that you see, before we then go into the clips.

We may only have a few more Stan Lee appearances left, but because of what the man accomplished through his long life, his characters will live on for decades more. Although Stan Lee didn’t have a hand in creating Carol Danvers, writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan have that honor), he did co-create (with Colan) her comics predecessor, Mar-Vell, who was portrayed by Annette Bening in the Captain Marvel movie.

Captain Marvel was the first MCU movie of 2019, but there’s a lot more to look forward to this year. In less than two months, Avengers: Endgame will pick up where Avengers: Infinity War left off, with half of all life in the universe being wiped out by Thanos and his Infinity Stones-powered fingers. Marvel is still keeping tight-lipped about specific plot details, but we can at least look forward to the surviving heroes banding together to defeat Thanos and undo his genocide. Carol Danvers will be part of this group, and the Captain Marvel mid-credits scene showed her arriving at New Avengers base questioning where Nick Fury was, as before turning to dust, the former S.H.I.E..L.D. director summoned her using his spruced-up pager.

Then in July, Spider-Man: Far From Home will kick off Phase 4 with Peter Parker traveling to Europe over summer vacation. Unfortunately, Peter won’t get a break from his superhero lifestyle during this trip, as Nick Fury will recruit him to fight the Elementals alongside Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio. Since Spider-Man was arguably Lee’s most famous creation, it would be a shame if Far From Home didn’t involve him in some way, so fingers crossed that gets to be his final cameo.

Don’t forget to read CinemaBlend’s review of Captain Marvel, and stay tuned for more updates on the MCU. Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26 and Spider-Man: Far From Home follows on July 5. You can also find out what non-Marvel movies are coming out this year by looking through our 2019 release schedule.

Rambo 5: What We Know So Far About Last Blood

Rambo 5: What We Know So Far About Last Blood
Rambo V: Last Blood John Rambo dressed for the ranch with a cowboy hat and flannel

Besides his work as legendary boxing icon Rocky Balboa, there’s one other role that actor/writer/director Sylvester Stallone is known for: Vietnam Vet turned one man army John Rambo. Since 1982’s First Blood, the character has become a staple in the lexicon of action/drama fans worldwide, and with over a billion dollars in international grosses across four films, that's not an overestimation. All of that history looks to come to a close with Rambo 5, the (presumably) final entry in the series.

Already in the midst of production, Stallone’s fifth and final outing as one of his most famous contributions to pop culture has a lot of details available to the public awaiting John Rambo’s latest foray into combat. So, leave it to us to help you sort through what we know so far about the project, and how it shapes what the film looks like in its current form. Keep in mind, the information below is subject to change, so if you’re a Rambo superfan, you’ll want to check back often to see what’s new. For now, here’s what we know so far about Rambo 5.

What Is The Rambo 5 Title?

Initially, the fourth Rambo sequel was just known as Rambo V, stylized with a Roman numeral, much like Rambo III. That was changed not too long after the film was greenlit under an earlier concept, which changed the title to Rambo V: The Savage Hunt. That title lasted for a little while, up until that rather outlandish story was replaced with a couple of concepts, one of which was entitled Rambo: Last Stand. Of course, the title didn’t last, as that concept was also rejected, leading to Rambo V landing the extremely fitting final title of Rambo V: Last Blood. Unless anything happens between now and the film’s fall release date, this is presumably the title we’ll see whenever the trailers start to drop. Let’s hope that title sticks as well as the name for Rambo’s new knife does.

When Is The Rambo 5 Release Date?

Rambo V: Last Blood has landed the prime release date of September 20, 2019. Once Rambo V: Last Blood had a story locked down, the film went into production in late 2018, wrapping before the end of the year and commemorated by a very thankful Sylvester Stallone on social media. This allows the film to be more than ready for the date it’s set its sights on, though there is a bit of competition in the weeks flanking the release.

With IT: Chapter 2 and The Goldfinch releasing in the two weeks before Rambo V: Last Blood’s arrival, the mature viewer’s film market will be a bit crowded at the start of September. Meanwhile, the week after this picture’s release holds a spot for an untitled Blumhouse project, which could split the market after opening. But, the greatest challenge may lie in the day of release, as Screen Gems’ police action thriller Black and Blue is set to debut alongside John Rambo’s final return.

What Will Rambo 5 Be Rated?

While there isn’t an official rating from the Motion Picture Association of America yet, seeing as the film hasn’t been submitted for classification yet, we don’t have an official answer on just what rating Rambo V: Last Blood will have. That having been said, the historical precedent does spell out an all but absolutely certain outcome, and it’s the one that fans will definitely be happy with.

Typically, the Rambo series has been an R-rated enterprise, from First Blood to the most recent entry, simply titled Rambo. Considering the level of action and carnage that have been integrated into the franchise throughout its history, it’s certainly not expected to change with Rambo V: Last Blood. So, while we can’t say dead certain that Sylvester Stallone’s warfighter won’t be downgrading to a PG-13 for ticket sales, we can say that decision is as likely as Rambo failing in his mission.

What Will Rambo 5 Be About?

If the original concepts for Rambo V: Last Blood had stuck, there would have been everything from an ill-advised sci-fi angle to a much different and more grounded concept. We’ll discuss the details of those later, but for now we can say that after all of the effort poured into this latest Rambo movie’s story, there’s a clear path for it to follow.

Rambo V: Last Blood will follow John Rambo’s mission into Mexico, to recover Gabriella, the daughter of a friend who went to the country of her birth in order to try and find her father. He left her as a child, and the pull of locating him is strong for Gabriella, but Rambo and her grandmother don’t approve of the idea, which is eventually proven to be a valid fear, as she’s kidnapped by a drug cartel during her trip. Before you can say “bow and arrow,” Rambo takes up arms and gets on with the show.

Who’s Directing Rambo 5?

Rambo V: Last Blood was directed by Adrian Grunberg, who up until this point has made a name for himself as a second unit director. His work on shows such as Sense8 and Narcos, as well as films like Apocalypto put him in a prime position to take the director’s chair one day, and that he did when he directed 2012’s Get The Gringo, for frequent collaborator Mel Gibson.

During the phase where various concepts for Rambo V: Last Blood were panning out, it looked like Sylvester Stallone might take the directing responsibilities for himself, as he’s been known to do in the past with projects he’s particularly passionate about. But, after a couple of his other concepts dropped off, Stallone ceded the director’s chair, and Grunberg was in!

What Is The Significance Of The Rambo 5 Title?

Before Rambo’s name eventually became the focus of the series’ title, it all started with a book written by David Morrell, entitled First Blood. The story of a Vietnam vet who, through a series of escalating incidents, becomes the subject of a woodland manhunt, the film adaptation kept that name intact. Eventually, that gave way to sequels titled Rambo: First Blood II, Rambo III, and most currently Rambo.

To create the title Rambo V: Last Blood highlights two possible points of order. The first is the obvious finality of this chapter in history, promising one last mission for John Rambo to carry out. But the more symbolic reason could be that just as First Blood kicked everything off with a more grounded and personal story, Rambo V: Last Blood will be returning to such a tactic, as opposed to merely sending him into Mexico with unlimited ammo to solve the problem.

Sylvester Stallone

It’s more than a safe bet to say that without Sylvester Stallone, Rambo wouldn’t be the man he is today. Since 1982, Stallone has put in the time and effort to revisit the character periodically, as well as keep himself in prime shape to do so, but especially when he had a reason to do so. This wasn’t only by showing up to play the part, though, as the action legend has worn many hats during the franchise’s long history.

Serving as a writer on each of the films leading up to, and including, Rambo V: Last Blood, Sylvester Stallone has always contributed to the story of John Rambo’s transition from wounded war vet to all time ass kicker. He even kicked things up a notch when, much like he did with Rocky Balboa, he revived his character as a writer and a director on the fourth entry to the series, Rambo. Though with this most recent project, Stallone only committed to co-writing and starring in the film.

Yvette Monreal

The role of Gabriella is one crucial to the narrative of Rambo V: Last Blood, so it’s going to take a young, but seasoned collaborator to jump into things and deliver. Cast in that role is actor Yvette Monreal, a teenaged professional with some impressive credits to her name.

Monreal is probably best known for her role as Adriana Gutierrez, on the hit Freeform drama The Fosters; though she’s also made appearances in shows like NCIS, and the El Rey network’s Matador. Her film credits include parts in the independent films Lowriders and Monsoon. In addition to her role in Rambo V: Last Blood, Yvette Monreal can also be seen on DC Universe’s Stargirl when it debuts at some point in 2020.

Paz Vega

Helping John Rambo in his quest to rescue Gabriella is her sister, reporter Carmen Delgado. Someone who’s familiar with the Mexican drug trade, as it’s her beat of reporting, Carmen will more than likely provide all the information about the local hierarchy and muscle that runs cartel operations, in the hopes that he’ll be able to retrieve Gabriella without much hassle.

Playing this role is Paz Vega, who was most recently seen in the Netflix original series The OA. Prior to that, Vega started her career in the Spanish film industry, with her big Hollywood debut coming from James L. Brooks’ dramedy Spanglish, alongside Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni. Other notable credits on Paz Vega’s resume include roles in the comic adaptation The Spirit, Pedro Almodavar’s I’m So Excited, and the historical drama Kill The Messenger.

Adrianna Barraza

At the end of Rambo, we saw the titular hero walking up to a ranch, more than ready to live the quiet life. That very ranch was none other than that of John Rambo’s father, and helping take care of that land for quite some time was Maria, Gabriella’s grandmother and spiritual sister to John Rambo. When Gabriella decides to go searching for her father in Rambo V: Last Blood, she voices her disapproval of the idea, and so does John.

For someone who’s considered the closest thing to a sister that Rambo ever had, an actor of similar iconic stature and gravitas to that of Sylvester Stallone is greatly needed, and this film found it when they cast Mexican acting legend Adriana Barraza. Barraza’s list of credits is a grab bag of huge names and titles, with TV shows like ER and CSI: Miami as well as films such as Amoros Perros and Babel. This won’t be the only time Barraza will be worried about an on-screen granddaughter, as she’s also playing Abuelita Valerie in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

Sergio Peris-Mencheta

Heroes, and their action franchises, need villains, and Rambo V: Last Blood is no exception. In the case of this fifth and final film in the Rambo saga, drug cartel kingpin Hugo Martinez is the man to beat in this crusade to save Gabriella. Her presumed abductor, and maybe even her father (if we have any eye for anticipating plot twists) this is the guy that will most likely fight John Rambo in the dramatic third act of this film.

Strangely enough, this probably won’t be the bloodiest battle that actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta will see in his career, as the Spanish actor was previously seen in Resident Evil: Afterlife. So, fighting Rambo is probably a bit of a scaled back experience when compared to a zombie apocalypse. Peris-Mencheta is also known for his appearance in Dan Fogelman’s critically blasted tear-jerker Life Itself, as well as for playing Gustavo Zapata, an enforcer as part of a drug enterprise in FX’s drama Snowfall.

Oscar Jaenada

One of the two actors cast to star in Rambo V: Last Blood without any character information given at the time is Oscar Jaenada. While we don’t know what his role is in the latest Rambo action adventure, we do know that he’s got an interesting range of credits for himself. Jaenada’s most prolific role was that of Mexican film legend Cantinflas in the titular biopic, which saw him nominated for the Ariel Award (the Mexican Oscar) for Best Actor. Jaenada’s other notable credits include roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and most recently in director Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking, as well as Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Joaquín Cosío

While the name Joaquin Cosio may not ring a bell to you at this moment, it only takes a look at the man’s credits to remind you that you probably have seen him more than once in your movie watching life. Most recognizably, Cosio can be seen as the secondary villain, General Medrano, in the James Bond adventure Quantum of Solace, as well as the Mexican wrester turned vampire hunter Angel Guzman Hurtado in FX’s The Strain. While we don’t know what Joaquin Cosio’s affiliation with the cartel is in Rambo V: Last Blood, we do know that he’s currently playing Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca on Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico.

John Rambo’s Combat History

Serving as a Green Beret in Vietnam, John Rambo first fought on screen in Washington state, during the events that transpired between himself and local law enforcement in First Blood. While those actions landed him behind bars, they brought him to the attention of his commanding officer, Col. Samuel Trautman, who would remain an ally and handler of his through the next two sequels, Rambo II and Rambo III.

In Rambo II, John was offered a literal get out of jail free card, in exchange for locating and aiding in the recovery of American POWs still in Vietnam. Using this opportunity to its fullest advantage, John saved the prisoners, and exposed a rogue element in the US military who specifically tried to hamper his efforts to rescue those missing in action. With Rambo III enlisting John Rambo to aid the Mujahideen against Soviet incursion, and Rambo seeing him rescue missionaries from a vicious warlord in Burma, you can begin to see why Rambo V: Last Blood’s title just might be a blessing for Rambo himself, even aside from the fact that Sylvester Stallone has really gotten banged up in this particular time out at the rodeo.

Rejected Concepts For Rambo 5

We’ve previously alluded to discarded concepts for Rambo V: Last Blood that just didn’t get off the ground, and their story content ranges from the interesting to the flat out absurd. The more grounded side of the spectrum had some of the components that eventually made their way into the final story, with human trafficking, drug cartels, and even a film that was supposed to directly invoke the limited scope of action that First Blood had thrived on. That last concept was entitled Rambo: Last Stand, but it was soon scrapped, with the abduction and drug cartel angles being combined to create Rambo V: Last Blood. And just as you’d suspect, there almost was a reboot of the entire franchise, as well as a TV series pitched in the interim.

But perhaps the most infamously dumped concept is Rambo V: The Savage Hunt; a film that would have seen John Rambo teaming up with a special ops team to hunt down an abnormally powered creature created in genetic experiments. Taken from the novel Hunter by James Byron Huggins, this idea would have pivoted the stereotypically action focused franchise into some new sci-fi shaded waters, but this angle was too out there for all involved and eventually gave way to the drafts that put Rambo on the track for his final, more realistic battle.

Rambo V: Last Blood will be headed our way on September 20, 2019, but should that release date or any other details we’ve mentioned above change, we’ll update this handy guide for your reference!

James Wan Shares First Photo From Annabelle Comes Home

James Wan Shares First Photo From Annabelle Comes Home

Director James Wan has been in the business for many years, but he's currently enjoying arguably his biggest success to date. Wan's DC debut Aquaman has helped Warner Bros.' shared universe bounce back, and the blockbuster was a critical and financial success. What's more, a sequel and spinoff are already in development. But Wan's roots are ultimately in the horror world, and he'll step back into the genre in a big way with Annabelle Comes Home, the upcoming threequel that he's producing.

James Wan introduced Annabelle to audiences when the creepy roll first popped up in The Conjuring, as the Warrens recounted some of their paranormal cases. She made enough of an impact that a spinoff movie was produced, aptly named Annabelle. It's sequel Annabelle: Creation improved on the franchise, and the upcoming threequel will include Vera Farmiga and Patrick Stewart's return to their Conjuring characters. Wan just revealed the first glimpse at Annabelle Comes Home, check it out below.

Annabelle is back, and this time she's got some friends with her. Annabelle Comes Home will bring us back to the Warren's house, especially their terrifying room of haunted artifacts. And this poster teases that the haunted doll has some tricks up her little sleeve.

Annabelle Comes Home will focus largely on the Warren's daughter Judy, who we've seen a few times throughout the Conjuring franchise. This time she'll be played by young actress Mckenna Grace, who audiences will recognize from I, Tonya, and Gifted. Demonologists The Warrens will procure Annabelle after rescuing the doll's latest victims, and bring her back to their home. The couple has an entire room of haunted objects, but it looks like Annabelle will have a power the weren't prepared for. Instead, they may have given her a group of demonic allies.

This new poster and Annabelle Comes Home's concept tease a very exciting threequel, forming a trilogy of horror movies in the process. The Warrens have been kept largely separate from the spinoffs, so it's exciting to see the deeper connection to the original franchise. James Wan is onboard as a producer, and his involvement should give cynics reason to relax. Especially as he continues basking in the sun of Aquaman's success.

The Annabelle franchise has already had an interesting life in theaters. The original film was the very first spinoff to come from The Conjuring Universe, something which will become more popular in the coming years. Annabelle was poorly received by critics, but it still managed to be a box office success. Annabelle: Creation was significantly better in quality, and made even more money at the box office. As such, the pressure is on for Annabelle Comes Home to deliver when it arrives this summer.

All will be revealed when Annabelle Comes Home arrives in theaters on June 28th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

How Much Money Will Other Movies Make During Endgame's Opening Weekend?

How Much Money Will Other Movies Make During Endgame's Opening Weekend?
la llorona scared kid

As you must have heard by now, Avengers: Endgame is in theaters and it's doing pretty well for itself. That's obviously an understatement, as the film shatters box office records and is poised to break a few more before long. However, Endgame isn't the only movie in theaters right now. Those films have absolutely zero hope of getting first place, but how will they perform when one movie is the center of all the attention? Relatively decent, by the looks of it.

Other than Endgame, the other films currently in nationwide theaters include The Curse of La Llorona, Shazam!, Captain Marvel, Breakthrough, Dumbo, Little, Missing Link, Pet Sematary, and Us. A lot of different options for moviegoers to choose from, but on the whole, none of these films are projected to make more than $11 million this weekend.

The Curse of La Llorona is likely to take second place this weekend. The horror film, which follows a mother in the 1970s trying to protect her kids from a ghost, is currently projected to gross $10.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie opened last week to $26.3 million. Llorona has grossed $65.2 million worldwide. Overall, the Conjuring Universe film has performed well and, seeing as its one of the newer releases, it makes sense that it takes second place.

Following Llorona is likely to be DC's Shazam! The superhero movie is projected to close out the week with $9.1 million. Shazam! opened a few weeks ago to favorable reviews and has enjoyed a healthy box office run so far. The film currently sits at $328.6 million worldwide, which isn't too bad for standalone first time superhero.

Endgame isn't the only Marvel movie in town. Captain Marvel is still kicking. The film has already made over $1 billion worldwide and cemented Carol Danvers into the MCU, but this weekend will still see it gross around $7.3 million more. Funnily enough, you can also see Captain Marvel appear in Endgame for a double dosage of Carol.

Those three are the most significant numbers of the bunch. The rest are currently projected to be as follows: Breakthrough, $6.1 million; Dumbo, $3.8 million; Little, $3.8 million; Missing Link, $2.4 million; Pet Sematary, $2.3 million; and Us, $1.9 million. Not exactly numbers to write home about, but some of these titles have been in theaters for a while now, so it's natural that they are grossing much smaller numbers.

We'll have to wait and see how next week shakes out. The two big releases are Ugly Dolls and the comedy Long Shot, but it doesn't seem likely that either will be able to dethrone Endgame. That honor might go to Detective Pikachu the following week on May 10, but who can say at this point?

You can see any of the above movies in theaters (unless your local theater shut out anything not called Endgame), or you can go see Avengers: Endgame again.

Why Emperor Palpatine Is Probably Alive In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

Why Emperor Palpatine Is Probably Alive In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
Emperor Palpatine Star Wars

In what has been one of the biggest Star Wars twists since Darth Vader pulled a "who's your daddy" on Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, Emperor Palpatine has been revealed to play a part in the drama that is Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. While some have speculated we'll see Palpatine in the form of a Sith force ghost or via recordings, I have reason to suspect he'll actually be alive in the film.

That's right, "Papa Palpatine," as he was referred to as in Robot Chicken, is either back in the land of the living or he never left in the first place. Believe it or not, there's plenty of canon material and things we know about the character to support that, much of which can be found below. Start getting used to the idea, as these are all the reasons Emperor Palpatine is probably alive in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Sith Are Resilient Survivors

Take a look at some of the biggest Sith enemies in the Star Wars films and think back on how many bounced back from some incredible injury. There's Darth Maul, who managed to bounce back from being sliced in half, and Anakin Skywalker, who lost most of his limbs and was burned alive. Even General Grievous somewhat counts, although technically he's not really a Sith, just an organic cyborg with impressive lightsaber skills.

The point is the Sith's hatred, for all its downsides, seems to be a superpower, in that it fuels their will to survive. Few Sith hated or channeled the Dark Side as much as Palpatine, so it's hard to believe even in his advanced age that he was completely unable to bounce back like the Sith before him.

Let's also remember he was only thrown down a very large hole. Sure there's was an explosion towards the end that implied he collided with some energy source and was vaporized, but maybe that was some advanced illusion or tactic to protect his body. Clearly his plan had failed, so it makes sense he'd fake his death and perhaps try again three decades later.

Sith Can Return By Putting Their Essence Within An Object

This is a rather recent development in the Sith lore, which comes to us courtesy of Marvel Comics' Darth Vader comics. There, readers learned of Momin, a Sith who had unlocked some of the secrets behind returning from death back to the world of the living as a Sith. He does this via his dark essence, which lingers in the helmet he wore when he was alive.

Through the helmet, Momin was able to possess the bodies of others who donned it and live on through them. It's also worth noting Momin discovered a way to open the door to the ethereal plane, which Vader used in an attempt to bring Padme back to life. Vader was ultimately unsuccessful, although Momin used the door to the Dark Side to bring his original body back to the land of the living.

This new Star Wars story isn't just important because it shows Sith returning from the dead, but also because it establishes that Momin's studies were known of by Palpatine. After he was killed by Vader, Momin's mask was stored on Darth Sidious' private yacht. So the Emperor may have studied Momin's methods and worked out a way to achieve a similar artifact with his essence.

One downside of this tactic, of course, is that someone would need to don Palpatine's artifact for him to possess and assume their form. With that said, it appears a significant chunk of the Death Star survived that fall, which could mean a small community of stormtroopers survived as well. This is just speculation, but say this method was utilized and there were surviving stormtroopers. Palpatine could have kept on living despite his death through host soldiers.

It's an exciting thought, imagining a cult of the Empire still hanging on in a brave new world, but largely separated from the war at large. He could be in hiding or simply waiting until one side has emerged as a victor so he can infiltrate and begin his next reign all over again. Man, wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth?

Palpatine Has A Clone Contingency Plan

Ok, so we know Disney isn't about to open up the can of worms and start making all parts of the former expanded Star Wars universe canon, but there has been some things that have returned. Grand Admiral Thrawn is one big example, and it's possible the Emperor's clone contingency plan could make a return as well.

For those who are unfamiliar, Emperor Palpatine had a cloning facility explicitly built for the purpose of transferring his essence into a new body should he be killed. The Emperor was successfully transferred over to clones, although his immense power meant he had a tendency to burn through the bodies rather quickly. It wasn't ideal, but it allowed him to keep on living indefinitely, which he then used to attempt and regain his former power.

While Dark Horse's early '90s Dark Empire run is no longer canon, it's worth wondering if Star Wars is looking to it for inspiration as it seeks to wrap up the Skywalker Saga. This series is notable not just for the Emperor's cloning, but for its inclusion of Han and Leia's son, although his name is Anakin and not Ben. It also featured the return of Boba Fett, which a recent Star Wars tale has implied is alive once again.

Are these all just coincidences or the foundation that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has based its story on? Again, there's a precedence of Star Wars cherry picking past Legends stories and tweaking them in a way that makes sense for the new canon. With cloning established as a viable technology in the Prequel Trilogy, this would be a great way to bring those films into the mix and strengthen this saga's connection even further.

These are just some of the ways Palpatine can return, and while something like a Force ghost, flashbacks or holocron recordings are a possibility, it would be so much cooler to see him return in the flesh. Would Rey be able to stand against such a powerful Sith lord in battle? What about Kylo Ren? I don't have the answers, but it'd be cool to see a battle between the three to find out!

Those with other ideas on how Palpatine will return can sound off in the comments below, or vote in our poll on whether they think he'll return from the dead or not. We'll find out in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is in theaters Friday, December 20.
