8 Team-Ups We'd Love to See in Avengers: Endgame

8 Team-Ups We'd Love to See in Avengers: Endgame
Captain America Iron Man Civil War movie

There is so much to look forward to in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, especially considering it is the culmination of the entire MCU thus far. The highly-anticipated film will find the Avengers dealing with the fallout of their failure to stop Thanos, as well as looking into a way to undo his massacre throughout the universe. Action, high-stakes, and drama are all right there in that previous sentence, but if there is one thing you can count on in an Avengers films, it should be awesome team-ups.

The MCU is filled with larger-than-life personalities and when they clash, it creates sparks. That's the bread and butter of the MCU and it was never more savory than in Avengers: Infinity War. Endgame may be working with fewer pieces, but there's still ample room to produce some fun, weird, and dramatic team-ups. I mean did you see Rocket and War Machine in that trailer? It was rad as hell!

We already know some characters like Black Widow and Hawkeye will be pairing up at times, but here are some other options that I would love to see play out on screen.

Captain America And Iron Man

This is a big one. Fans have been waiting to see these two reunited since their friendship crumbled in Captain America: Civil War. Their division is a big reason why Thanos was able to win in the first place, and if they want any hope in stopping him then they'll have to bury the hatchet. Unfortunately, not telling your friend that his parents were murdered by your brainwashed best friend is a tough hurdle to leap. The two pillars of the MCU should absolutely be working out their troubles, which should make for plenty of drama and some real kickass moments when they finally make up.

Hawkeye And Ant-Man

The Avengers team consists of gods, wizards, kings, geniuses, and super soldiers, which is why Ant-Man and Hawkeye seem like such a natural pairing. Take away their tools, and these two are just regular dudes who happen to know the most powerful beings on the planet. Perhaps more importantly, the two of them are also family men, and gave up their freedom so that they could stay under house arrest with their families. They share something that none of the other Avengers can really relate to. It's also highly likely that both of them lost some of or their entire families in The Snap, which means they should know exactly what the other is going through. Plus, Ant-Man can ride another arrow! That should be reason enough for a team-up.

Black Widow And Nebula

I never would have imagined in a million years that Nebula would survive long enough to be this important of a character in the MCU. However, here we are! She's been right there alongside the Avengers suited up and ready to save the galaxy. It's awesome, and I'm really excited to see how she interacts with Earth's heroes. When it comes to pairings, Black Widow might just be the most interesting. They have both suffered from abuse, but took their pain in opposite directions. Widow eventually learned how to become a selfless hero while Nebula focused on revenge. It'd be interesting to see how the two of them interact, but there's no question they'd kick a lot of butt together.

Iron Man And Rocket

Back during the wait for Avengers: Infinity War, this was probably one of the most requested team-ups. Unfortunately, there wasn't really a way to get Tony Stark and Rocket in the same room during that film, but they absolutely will be meeting in Endgame. Who doesn't want to see these two butt heads? They are both snarky geniuses with big personalities, so there would certainly be sparks. Plus, Rocket just might be smarter than Tony, which would make for some humorous one-upmanship. Rocket might even have some ideas on how to upgrade Tony's suit, and it'd be rad to see the two of them unloading their arsenal on Thanos -- if Rocket isn't busy doing that with War Machine.

Captain Marvel And Captain America

Captain Marvel is getting into position to be the new lead of the MCU, and I would imagine there will be some passing of the torch moments for her. While she looks to be hitting it off with Thor, Captain America is the Avenger I really want to see her team-up with. Obviously, the two of them are captains, which makes for some fun wordplay, but they have other similarities as well. Both of them have a background in the armed forces, they share a strong sense of right and wrong, they're stubborn, and they are beautiful blonde people. I think the two of them would really get along and it'd be great to see a mutual respect or admiration build over the course of the film. This is probably the last time Carol Danvers can spend time with the original Avengers, so I hope she gets to know Steve Rogers while she still can.

Iron Man And Hawkeye

Here's a pairing you don't see every day, despite the fact these two have been in the MCU since Phase One. Iron Man and Hawkeye don't hang out much, and the one time they did, they were beating each other up. As much as there is a divide between Cap and Tony, there's likely still beef between Tony and Clint. The last time they saw each other was fairly intense, as Clint drilled into Tony for his mistakes after Clint was locked in the Raft with the rest of Team Cap. They didn't part on the best of terms, and it'd be interesting to see if there is still any leftover resentment -- especially from Clint, who looks really unhappy in the trailers for Endgame.

Hulk And Black Widow

I will fully admit to being onboard the Bruce Banner X Black Widow train, which is not a popular ride in the MCU community. What can I say? I like the out-of-left-field pairing; I think it's unique, and even though it was pretty rushed, I just enjoy watching the two of them together. We haven't seen this relationship develop much at all since Age of Ultron and it looks like the two had some scenes cut from Avengers: Infinity War. My hope is that the two of them can spend some time together in Endgame and that relationship can finally advance forward. Bruce Banner has a Hulk problem and Natasha has always been a soft spot for the Green Goliath. Whether they end up together or not, Endgame might be the film that devotes enough time to this relationship to get more fans onboard.

Thor, Hulk, And Captain Marvel

I can't think of anything that would send the movie into more applause than seeing Thor, Hulk, and Captain Marvel team-up in a fight against Thanos. That's an idea that sells itself. It features the three most powerful Avengers going head-to-head against the Mad Titan over the fate of the universe. That would be an action set piece in all its glory. It's worth noting that that the three of them are not seen during the Avengers slow-mo walk at the end of the latest trailer, and my theory is that they are off on their own mission as a Thanos Kill Squad. However, Marvel trailers are never to be fully trusted and it's possible that the were simply edited out of the trailer but will be there for the final movie. Still though, it'd make for one epic fight scene.

If I had an infinite amount of time, I would probably have ended up listing every combination possibility for Endgame because I love just seeing these characters talk and hang out. The backbone of the MCU is the characters and matching them up can result unexpected chemistry. Who could have predicted the bromance between Thor and Rocket? It's weird pairings like this that make the MCU films fun to watch 22 films later and let's hope they bring out all the stops in Endgame.

Apparently Johnny Depp's Return For Fantastic Beasts 3 Isn't Official Yet

Apparently Johnny Depp's Return For Fantastic Beasts 3 Isn't Official Yet
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Johnny Depp Grindelwald

Johnny Depp is still currently expected to continue as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and the rest of the planned five-film franchise. However, on the heels of Warner Bros. delaying Fantastic Beasts 3 production again, but finally giving the movie a confirmed release date, word has come that Depp has yet to officially sign on for the 2021 movie.

This is one of those anonymous source situations, so stay in a skeptical Hermione mindset. That said, "a source close to Johnny Depp" told The Blast the actor has not been approached by the studio yet to exercise the option in his contract for Fantastic Beasts 3. The site said Depp does have a contract through the five-film franchise but, like the rest of the stars, his option for each movie is handled separately by Warner Bros.

What does that mean? Maybe nothing, especially without knowing the situations of the other main cast members. But The Blast also brought up Johnny Depp's legal issues -- specifically the ugly back-and-forth abuse allegations with ex-wife Amber Heard. The site said it too had been told a few Warner Bros. execs were pushing for Depp to be fired from Fantastic Beasts, but many of the "heavy hitters" have maintained full support.

One of those heavy hitters is said to be J.K. Rowling herself, and the Harry Potter author already made it clear before The Crimes of Grindelwald came out that she was fully supportive of Johnny Depp.

The very public issues between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been going on so long that his casting was put up for debate even before the second film came out. Now here we are waiting for the third film, and the ongoing lawsuits keep adding new allegations from both sides.

Johnny Depp has a defamation suit against Amber Heard tied to her Washington Post op-ed piece on speaking up against sexual violence. He claims her abuse allegations are part of an "elaborate hoax" to boost her career. His team is also trying to tie that op-ed to Depp losing his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Amber Heard's side accused Depp of trying to get her fired from her role as Mera in DC/Warner Bros.'s Aquaman.

Fantastic Beasts 3 was originally set to begin production this summer, with a hoped-for but not official release date of November 2020. Production was initially pushed back to late fall 2019. Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski) said filming was delayed because the third movie is "bigger than the first two combined." The "gigantic" movie needed more time to prep, and they didn't want to rush anything.

Just recently, filming was pushed back to start in spring 2020, with the film getting an official release date of November 2021. The first two films were released in November 2016 and November 2018, respectively.

J.K. Rowling is writing all five movies in this franchise; she is said to currently be re-working the third movie's script to try and make it better than Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald after the relative disappointment of the second movie with fans, critics, and the box office.

As far as we know, Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast will continue in their roles from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. If that changes due to contracts or other issues, you can bet there will be big reactions from every side of the fandom. The third film's title has yet to be revealed, but here's what we do know so far about Fantastic Beasts 3.

The Blade Runner Universe Is Expanding In A Cool Way

The Blade Runner Universe Is Expanding In A Cool Way

Last year's Blade Runner 2049 finally transported us back to a neon noir Los Angeles and the world of replicants after 35 long years. Denis Villeneuve's film was a critical darling and earned Roger Deakins his long overdue Oscar, but it didn't exactly set the box office on fire. So although Ridley Scott is keen on continuing the franchise, we don't currently know what the future holds for Blade Runner on the big screen. Fortunately we won't have to wait another 35 years for more content from this fascinating universe. Alcon Media Group and Titan Publishing are teaming up to explore the Blade Runner universe in comics and graphic novels.

The co-publishing venture, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, will see the Blade Runner universe explored and expanded on, telling new stories we've never seen before. The comics and graphic novels will dive deeper into the universe established by the films with in-canon stories. The hope is to organically grow the world of the franchise, while still maintaining the tone and quality it is known for. Titan Publishing isn't new to print tie-ins with movie and TV properties either, having published books set in the Marvel, DC and Doctor Who universes. In a statement, Titan's publishers noted that the Blade Runner universe still has much to be explored and they intend to bring the world to life for a new audience. The announcement did not give a timeline for when we can expect these Blade Runner comics or any hints as to what stories we can expect and whether or not we will see any returning characters like K or Deckard.

This is a pretty cool way to expand the universe of Blade Runner, _and has tons of potential. In lieu of another movie or a TV show, it's exciting that _Blade Runner will continue in a visual medium. While based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the universe established in the films is so visually striking with such a distinct aesthetic that keeping it in the visual realm will maintain a big aspect of what it is known for. Graphic novels and comic books seem well suited to tackle the cyberpunk aesthetic while telling new stories. The only challenge will be that you now have to play that insane score in your head, or just play it in the background.

The Blade Runner universe is fairly untapped outside of the films and the universe is rich with potential. So there is a ton of possibility where these graphic novels could go. I imagine one of the stories people would most like to see is one that fills in the time from when we last saw Harrison Ford's Deckard in the first film to when we see him again in Blade Runner 2049. Another cool option would be to see an origin for Roy Batty. The fact that these comic and graphic novels will be in-canon is also interesting, especially if Blade Runner gets another film down the line.

Stay locked on CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated on all the latest from the growing Blade Runner universe, and for all the biggest movies hitting theaters this year, check out our release schedule.

Doctor Sleep: An Updated Cast List

Doctor Sleep: An Updated Cast List
Ewan McGregor Christopher Robin

The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep has wrapped production and it won't be long until the world gets to see the next chapter of a story that's been lauded with high acclaim over the years. The legacy of Stephen King's novel and its adaptation by Stanley Kubrick will ensure many eyes are on Doctor Sleep when it hits theaters.

Though audiences today seem to love a Stephen King adaptation, it's understandable if Doctor Sleep's development got lost among the sea of various projects currently in the works in Hollywood. For those who don't know, this movie has a cast to be excited about, so hop on down below and see who all is involved, and what roles they'll be playing in this latest adaptation. First up here's Danny!

Ewan McGregor As Danny Torrance

Iconic actor Ewan McGregor is stepping into the shoes of Danny Torrance decades after the events in The Shining. Danny is now Dan, and while he's survived his childhood, he's inherited some of his father's worst traits in adulthood. Dan eventually conquers his demons, and uses his regained psychic abilities to comfort patients. This earned him the nickname of "Doctor Sleep," and eventually intertwines his fate with that of a girl with powers similar to his.

Rebecca Ferguson As Rose The Hat

Mission: Impossible Fallout and The Girl On The Train actress Rebecca Ferguson is back in Doctor Sleep, and playing a very important role opposite of McGregor's Dan. Rose The Hat is the leader of a group called The True Knot, which is comprised of a group of individuals with unique abilities. Without getting too deep into spoilers, this group is bad news and will cause some problems for Danny boy in the movie.

Kyliegh Curran As Abra Stone

Kyliegh Curran is a relative newcomer to Hollywood set to take on a key role in Doctor Sleep. Curran plays Abra Stone, a young girl who psychically links with Dan and, unfortunately, becomes aware of The True Knot. With the group setting her in its crosshairs, Dan will do all he can in order to protect the girl? Will he succeed? Remember this is a Stephen King work, so the safety of children is never guaranteed.

Bruce Greenwood As Dr. John Dalton

Not long after he played a key supporting role in the Stephen King adaptation of Gerald's Game, Bruce Greenwood is again a part of the author's film universe in Doctor Sleep. Greenwood portrays Dr. John Dalton, one of the people in the novel to whom Dan first reveals his connection with Abra. The quiet intensity Greenwood can bring to roles is great for King works in general, so he should be an excellent addition to the cast.

Zahn McClarnon As Crow Daddy

Zahn McClarnon was a great enforcer in FX's Fargo, so it's no surprise he's found his way into Doctor Sleep as another dangerous man to look out for. McClarnon plays Crow Daddy, right hand man to Rose The Hand and lover in the novels. Given this work is supposed to be a faithful novel adaptation, there's no reason to believe that will change.

Emily Alyn Lind As Snakebite Andi

If that character name wasn't any indication, Emily Alyn Lind's Snakebite Andi is a member of the The True Knot who will cause some problems for Dan and Abra. Like them and other members of The True Knot, she has a unique ability she can use on others to lull them to sleep. With an ability like that, are we sure Danny is the one who should have that nickname?

Carl Lumbly As Dick Halloran

Prolific film and television actor Carl Lumbly is a part of Doctor Sleep, and will step into the shoes of another character that was around during The Shining. For those who don't recognize the name Dick Halloran, he was the Overlook's chef who also had abilities. Dick has actually appeared as a character in quite a few Stephen King works over the years, so it's possible other nods to King works could happen via him.

Alex Essoe As Wendy Torrance

Alex Essoe will play the role of Wendy Torrance, a role made iconic by Shelley Duvall. The actress is involved in Doctor Sleep's moments in the past, so she'll probably be seen with Dick Halloran. I'm assuming she'll be in scenes with a young Danny Torrance as well. Essoe bears a resemblance to Duvall, and I'd personally love to see one or two of The Shining's iconic scenes recreated in a dream or something just to compare the two performances.

Jocelin Donahue

Jocelin Donahue is no stranger to horror films, and has been in features such as Insidious: Chapter 2, The House of The Devil and others. Donahue's role has not been officially announced, although there are some sites out there listing her role as the mother of Abra, Lucy. Provided that's legitimate, that's a big character who will help bridge the gap between the original film and the sequel.

Jacob Tremblay

One of Hollywood's most in-demand and talented child actors is involved in Doctor Sleep, and will be playing a mystery role. Many have speculated Tremblay will play a young Danny Torrance, which wouldn't be surprising considering that's who 90% of Americans would cast in the role if we were fantasy casting for a reboot of The Shining. If Tremblay does end up playing Danny, let's hope he does at least one finger wag and "redrum" for nostalgia's sake.

*Zackary Momoh *

Seven Seconds standout Zackary Momoh has been added to Doctor Sleep in a role that has yet to be revealed. With his role undefined, there's really no clear guess as to who he may be playing. Whoever he's playing, expect an emotional performance and this role to potentially be the start of a much larger career in Hollywood.

*Carel Struycken *

Famous character actor Carel Struycken is a part of Doctor Sleep, with some outlets alleging he'll play the role of Grandpa Flick. In Doctor Sleep, Flick gets his nickname for being the oldest member of The True Knot. His presence more or less is the catalyst for the The True Knot to spring into action, although his role is ultimately not that large.

As mentioned, Doctor Sleep has wrapped production, and is expected in theaters November 8. For more on the film, be sure to read up on Ewan McGregor's thoughts on the project, and the one person he's hoping is pleased with he and the cast's effort.

The Twilight Franchise Had The Perfect Response To Robert Pattinson’s Possible Batman Role

The Twilight Franchise Had The Perfect Response To Robert Pattinson’s Possible Batman Role
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Twilight

Robert Pattinson… we know who you are. Alright, I’ll say it out loud. He’s Batman! The 32-year-old actor best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight films is reportedly closing a deal with Warner Bros to play the next Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Meaning it's time to dust off those coffin cobwebs and get out all those Twilight related references. Even the Twilight Saga itself couldn’t resist commenting on social media. Take a look:

Good one! Since the series of films centered on Bella Swan’s love triangle between a sparkly vampire and a shirtless sometimes-werewolf, the fandom was always divided between Team Edward and Team Jacob respectively. With this casting news, the franchise is showing its support for Robert Pattinson’s new high-profile role on Twitter.

The actor has been rumored as one of potential Bruce Wayne’s for the upcoming DC film for a few months following Ben Affleck officially stepping down from the role at the beginning of the year. It should be noted that Warner Bros has not officially announced Robert Pattinson as the next Batman, and other reports name Nicholas Hoult also among the shortlist for the role, but the studio hasn’t denied the news since it broke on Thursday evening.

Robert Pattinson’s fame may have kicked off with a franchise heavily criticized and loathed by the public, he has since showed off his acting chops in indie projects including Good Time, High Life and The Lost City of Z. Not everyone is willing to see past his early work, as a petition for his casting has already made its way on the internet. An insignificant number of people have signed it so far and are based off passing judgements that dismiss the vision of Matt Reeves.

The filmmaker is behind the last two Planet of the Apes films and is currently polishing the final draft of the script for The Batman. He’ll also direct the superhero flick that is said to embrace the noir elements of the comics and see the Caped Crusader really utilize his detective skills. The Batman will also reportedly feature a rogues gallery of villains, with the Penguin reportedly at the forefront of them.

Robert Pattinson has said he’s “been a little wary of doing big movies for years and years,” but then Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie came his way. Pattinson is set to star in the Dark Knight filmmaker’s action blockbuster in 2020 with Elizabeth Debicki and John David Washington. Maybe he figured he’s doing a big movie already, why not go for another? What if Nolan himself played a part in endorsing or convincing the actor to take on the Bat!

The Batman is expected to begin filming within the year and arrive to theaters on June 25, 2021. Are you Team Bruce after this casting news? Let us know in the comments below.

Where Did Uma Thurman Go After Her Quentin Tarantino Movies?

Where Did Uma Thurman Go After Her Quentin Tarantino Movies?
Uma Thurman Get Shorty

Uma Thurman had been around Hollywood in solid roles nearly a decade prior to appearing in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, although it feels that film is really where it all started. That pattern's continued with Thurman's career since, as the actress found high acclaim for her starring role in Kill Bill. Since then, Thurman might have dropped off the face of the earth as far as some are concerned, but that's not the case.

So what's Uma Thurman been up to since her last appearance in a Quentin Tarantino film? Quite a lot actually, and this list is here to highlight some of the films the actress has appeared in since 2004. Listed in chronological order, here are some of her bigger movies since then audiences eager to see more can check out.

Be Cool (2005)

Just a year removed from Kill Bill, Uma Thurman found herself as one of the key actors in a star-studded comedy that also stars John Travolta and features folks like Danny DeVito, Andre 3000, The Rock, and Vince Vaughn. Be Cool was a sequel to Get Shorty, with Travolta's Chili attempting to break into the music business. Thurman plays Edie Athens, the widow of Chili's friend and on the hook for money owed by the record label.

The film was far less popular with critics than Get Shorty. Director F. Gary Gray has since said part of that was due to him entering the film thinking he was making an R-rated feature, only to be told just ahead of production the goal was for the sequel to be PG-13. Gray told Deadline the film needed edge with its gangsta rap characters and mobsters, and keeping things safe hurt its quality.

The Producers (2005)

Ironically enough, Be Cool wouldn't be the only film Uma Thurman starred in that year with a plot involving a flop. Thurman played the role of Ulla in the 2005 remake adaptation of the successful Mel Brooks movie-turned-play The Producers. Thurman plays Swedish actress Ulla, who manages to get become a part of the show's production even before casting has officially begun. She and Leo eventually elope, and all's well that ends well, for the most part.

The Producers did better than Be Cool in the eyes of critics, but still received middling scores. None of that was due to Thurman's performance, but rather the thought that a lot of the film in general was better suited to the stage than the film world in general. With that said, the movie did go on to get four Golden Globe nominations, so it's not as though it was looked down on by everyone.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)

Superheroes have insane, unique abilities that make them close to gods in terms of power, but they have the same desires as average humans. My Super Ex-Girlfriend examines this somewhat, as Uma Thurman plays a super-heroine smitten by Luke Wilson's Matt who "saves" her from a purse snatcher. The two become the equivalent of Lois Lane and Superman... that is, until things start to get tense.

The two split, and Uma Thurman's G-Girl proceeds to make Matt's life a living hell for breaking up with her. It falls in the genre of superhero comedy, although it may not quite have the tone or action of other films like Thor: Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a much goofier take, but still features a solid performance from Thurman even if the film isn't quite a cinematic masterpiece.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)

2010 featured a rare appearance by Uma Thurman in a genre she's not seen in all that often: fantasy. Thurman played Medusa in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. It's a rather short cameo, which isn't all that bad because seeing Thurman with snake hair is quite a frightening visual!

Thurman's short-lived cameo was almost as short as the prospect of a Percy Jackson film franchise. The franchise had one more film following the first one called Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea Of Monsters, and things more or less flat-lined after that. There's been no talk of rebooting it since, although one would think it won't be too long before the idea surfaces given the rich source material to draw from.

Nymphomaniac (2013)

For those looking for a darker performance from Uma Thurman, this is the one to hit up. Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac features a supporting role from the actress, as she plays a distressed wife upset at finding her husband has left her for another lover. It's hard to describe the scene without outright spoiling it, but suffice to say it's a powerful emotional performance from Thurman that is only seen in some of her best work.

Thurman has just a small part of Nymphomaniac which, as the name suggests, isn't a film for everybody. Of course, those who enjoyed her in films like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill probably won't have a problem with the subject matter, but Lars von Trier does tend to push things quite a bit. It's a film about sex, so just be prepared to see that explored quite a bit.

Burnt (2015)

Uma Thurman is in another supporting role in Burnt, playing a famous restaurant critic named Simone that Bradley Cooper's Adam convinces to review his new restaurant. Thurman has a British accent in this role, and she pulls it off well enough one might be encouraged to double check her birthplace and make sure she wasn't doing an American accent this whole time. For the record, Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts.

Overall, Burnt has been sort of a mixed bag in regards to how audiences received it. Many praise Bradley Cooper's performance as one of the high points, but overall the film is thought to be fairly mediocre in terms of plot and dialogue. It's not that it's bad, but more or less a story folks have seen some version of before.

Uma Thurman's done a few things on the independent film circuit since then, and is due to appear in Netflix's upcoming supernatural drama Chambers. Fans will be able to check her out there soon enough, and can share their thoughts on Thurman's best performances outside of a Quentin Tarantino picture in the comments below. How Linda Cardellini Got A Funny Scooby-Doo Reference Into The Curse Of La Llorona

How Linda Cardellini Got A Funny Scooby-Doo Reference Into The Curse Of La Llorona
Linda Cardellini in The Curse of La Llorona

As Warner Bros.’ The Curse of La Llorona works its way to theaters this weekend, fans of The Conjuring universe will be scouring the backgrounds of scene looking for references and Easter Eggs to the larger story at hand. (And they are there, trust us.) But while paying attention to the background details in director Michael Chaves’ horror-thriller, we spotted a different reference that made us laugh, and we had to ask the cast about it.

The Curse of La Llorona takes place in the 1970s, where a social worker (Linda Cardellini) who is concerned about the welfare of some small children begins to investigate the mother’s claims that they are haunted by La Llorona. More on that myth in a moment, but in the background of a scene, kids are watching Scooby-Doo on a TV set. Makes sense. The animated show was huge in the 1970s. But there’s also a subtle gag there in that Linda Cardellini also played Velma in two live-action Scooby-Doo movies, and she told us it was her idea to get that animated reference in. She tells CinemaBlend:

Actually, it was a discussion too, when we were talking about it. And I was like… because it was a different Hanna-Barbera cartoon that we had in one version, and I was like, ‘What if they’re watching Scooby-Doo?’ And we just had a laugh about it. It was sort of like a little Easter Egg, I think.

These self-aware nods are hilarious to film lovers. Going into the movie, it’s fun to know that Linda Cardellini established her range on a popular family comedy like Scooby-Doo before switching gears, time and again, to show exactly what she is capable of as an actress. Sure she played Velma. But since then, Cardellini has impressed critics and crowds with roles in Brokeback Mountain, E.R., Mad Men, the Avengers movies, and most recently on the Netflix drama Bloodline.

As she elaborated in the Scooby-Doo nod, she explained how that movie helped her switch gears and challenger herself as an actress. Cardellini told us:

That was, to me, I had just come off of Freaks and Geeks, and so doing something like Scooby-Doo seemed like a crazy departure, playing Velma. And [this] was like, I had just come off of Daddy’s Home and then I decided to do this film. I just love that about acting, so it was fun for me.

Audiences will see a new side of Linda Cardellini in The Curse of La Llorona, as she plays a caring social worker who gets pulled into a terrifying mystery. She also, as a result, has to protect her own children from the threat of La Llorona, and Cardellini displays a ferocious Mama Bear side that we hadn’t seen from her before. Here she is discussing the movie, and Scooby-Doo:
