How Mid90s Star Was Able To Take Such Brutal Hits, According To Jonah Hill

Stevie, the protagonist in writer/director Jonah Hill's Mid90s, has a lot of notable characteristics -- from his intense desire to fit in, to his rebel spirit -- but the big standout is his ability to take a hit. Whether he's falling off his skateboard on to concrete, or taking a pummeling from his older brother, he's always able to bounce back. Even with knowledge of movie magic it's both brutal and impressive to watch, and Hill gives all the credit to his star, Sunny Suljic, for going all-out and just giving the film everything he's got. Said the first-time director of the young actor,

Let me tell you something: Daniel Day Lewis has nothing on this guy. Anytime you see him getting beat up, falling down, you know, it's this guy... I'm 34 and I've never had to carry a movie like Sunny has to carry this film, and I've been acting for a long time. Anything that was asked of him, he went above and beyond. Same with Na-kel [Smith], same with everybody. But he took a lot of hits, and, you know, he's a strong man. The reason why I cast him is I wanted someone small for their age and was 10 feet tall inside, and you knew he could take it. And this dude went all the way. And he's alive in one piece!

Sunny Suljic's Stevie is taking brutal hits from the very first frame of Mid90s, shown being thrown into a wall by his aforementioned abusive sibling (played by Lucas Hedges), and through the course of the story he not only falls off his skateboard 100-something times and but even plummets from a roof. It's not all practical, of course, but speaking with Suljic, Jonah Hill, and Na-Kel Smith this week at the movie's Los Angeles press day only added to the film's credibility and the lead's legitimate resilience.

Based on an original screenplay by Jonah Hill, Mid90s is a period coming of age film that transports audiences to the titular time setting in Los Angeles, following the adventures of thirteen-year-old Stevie as he starts reaching maturity. What motivates the story is his discovery of a local skate shop and the teens who hang out within: the ace skateboarder Ray (Na-kel Smith); the party-loving Fuckshit (Olan Prenatt); the dummy Fourth Grade (Ryder McLaughlin); and the wannabe Ruben (Gia Galicia). Their friendship sees Stevie start to change his personality, but also make big choices that he can't reverse.

You can watch Jonah Hill discuss the performance of his young star in Mid90s by clicking play on the video below.

Mid90s, which also features Katherine Waterston and Jerrod Carmichael in addition to the actors mentioned above, arrives in theaters this Friday -- and be on the lookout for more from my interview with director and stars here on CinemaBlend.

Sylvester Stallone Compares Rocky's Grandson To Adrian In Sweet Photo

Sylvester Stallone Compares Rocky's Grandson To Adrian In Sweet Photo

Warning: SPOILERS For Creed II Ahead!

One of the ways in which Creed II expands on the four-decade Rocky saga is that it makes Rocky a grandfather. At the end of the film, Rocky visits his estranged son Robert (Rocky Jr.) and he meets his grandson Logan. Its a heartwarming moment in its own right, but Sylvester Stallone has made it extra poignant by sharing a photo of Rocky and Logan together and comparing the tyke to Rockys love Adrian. Take a look:

They may not actually be related but Sly is right that Logan Balboa, played by Robbie Johns in Creed II, does look a bit like Adrian. Especially in the eyes and with the smile, the young actor looks like Talia Shires character from the early Rocky films, who would be his in-universe grandmother. Rocky even mentions this to Rocky Jr. in Creed II, with his son responding, Yeah, I know.

It is clear that the casting director did a solid job with finding a child actor who looked like he could belong to the Balboa family, even though he only appears briefly in the film. Although Logan definitely seems to favor his father and grandmother more than Rocky himself, something I think Rocky would prefer.

In addition to just being a sweet sentiment, Sylvester Stallones Instagram post shows how emotionally layered the end of Rockys story is in Creed II. At the end of the film, after waffling over calling his son and bridging the gulf that had widened between them over the years, Rocky shows up on Rocky Jr.s doorstep. There he sees his son, once again played by Rocky Balboa and This is Uss Milo Ventimiglia in a surprising cameo, and he meets his grandson for the first time.

This moment has weight not only because it represents that wounds are beginning to heal and gives Rocky a happy ending, but because Rockys son and now his grandson couldnt have existed without Adrian. The loss of Adrian, Rockys great love, has hung over the modern Rocky films from Rocky Balboa onward, imbuing Rocky with a constant sense of longing and melancholy.

When Rocky met Logan, he was not only seeing his grandson, he was also seeing something of his dear, departed Adrian, telling Logan he looked like her. He then begins to tear up. It is both very sad, but also beautiful and joyous, signaling that although Adrian is gone, she lives on in this new life and Rocky can find happiness in the world without her.

Its really the perfect ending for the character, and this ending might actually stick because Sylvester Stallone has said that he is done playing Rocky.

While, we'll see if he holds true to his word on playing Rocky, another iconic character that Sly will soon be done with is John Rambo. The actor returns to the role in Rambo V: Last Blood on September 20. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all the movies headed to theaters this year.

Which Version Of Cheetah Kristen Wiig May Be Playing In Wonder Woman 2

Which Version Of Cheetah Kristen Wiig May Be Playing In Wonder Woman 2

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 has started to come together, and the casting of Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig as Cheetah has created quite a bit of hype around the movie. That said, we haven't heard much about the actual version of Cheetah that Wiig will play in the film, until now. New rumors have indicated that we can expect to see the Barbara Minerva incarnation of Cheetah in the upcoming DCEU solo film.

A new rumor floated by the folks over at Omega Underground seems to suggest that Kristen Wiig may portray arguably the most iconic version of Cheetah from the DC lore: Barbara Minerva. An archaeologist by trade (which lines up with Diana's DCEU job as a museum curator), Minerva is a selfish rival of Diana Prince who finds herself turned into a cheetah-like entity after a bizarre tribal ritual in the lost city of Uzkartagan. The ritual was intended to endow her with immortality; however, unbeknownst to Barbara, it was only meant for use on virgins, thus cursing her to her the persona of Cheetah.

The use of this form of Cheetah embraces some of the more iconic and familiar elements from the DC lore, and it also continues the DCEU's willingness to go all in on magic. Some of the earlier incarnations of Cheetah were merely women wearing Cheetah-inspired costumes, but the Barbara Minerva Cheetah has powers rooted in mysticism that make her a formidable opponent against Diana Prince in combat.

But don't take my word for it. Check out a fight scene between the character characters from Justice League: Doom to see for yourself.

One other thing that we should note about Cheetah's presence in Wonder Woman 2 is how she could factor into the future of the DC Extended Universe. Cheetah has a long history as a member of the Legion of Doom in DC Comics, and the ending of Justice League suggested that Lex Luthor intended to form a version of the supervillain team for a sequel. If Wonder Woman 2 introduces us to Barbara Minerva, and if fans respond well to her presence, then it's entirely possible that we could see Kristen Wiig reprise the role in a future Justice League sequel alongside other notable bad guys.

Wonder Woman 2 is currently aiming for a November 1, 2019 release date. Until we learn more about the Diana Prince-focused DCEU film, make sure to mark down your calendars for James Wan's Aquaman, which will debut later this year on December 21.

According to a recent rumor, we might be seeing Kristen Wiig suit up as the Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva version of the Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. While nothing is confirmed, it seems as though Wiig is
