5 Things We Really Want To See In Aquaman 2

5 Things We Really Want To See In Aquaman 2

It was a bit unexpected, but Aquaman has proven to be a box office juggernaut. The movie is well on its way to $1 billion worldwide and is the highest grossing film in the DCEU. In other words, this puppy has some serious sea legs, and we can likely expect the announcement of a sequel in the near future.

Aquaman has some issues, but the movie is fun, knows exactly what it is and is completely unafraid to have a Pitbull cover of "Africa." The world building in Aquaman is excellent, establishing a rich world under the sea, and now there's plenty of room to play around. There are still lots of other characters and storylines that would be perfect fits for the sequel. With that in mind, I've cobbled together some things that I think would be great if they were included in Aquaman 2.

Bring In AqualadJustice League and Aquaman did wonders for turning around the mainstream perception that Aquaman is the lamest superhero. Now it's time to bring in the lamest sidekick, Aqualad. Well, that's not entirely fair anymore. Aqualad already got a revitalization in the TV show Young Justice, which created an all-new version of the character named Kaldur'ahm. The water sword-bearing hero has become a fan-favorite, and I think this is the Aqualad who should get the movie role. In addition to his Atlantean roots, Kaldur is the son of Black Manta, Aquaman's sworn enemy, so it creates a really interesting dynamic.

The Dead King RisesAquaman established the history of Atlantis and how it was ruled through a time of innovation by the benevolent King Atlan. The plot of the film is all about finding Atlan's trident so Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) can become the true king of Atlantis, but there's a lot more to the story of Atlan. In the comics, he intentionally sinks Atlantis after his brother usurped the throne and killed his wife and children. Centuries later, Atlan rises from the grave as the Dead King, hellbent on gaining control of Atlantis once again. The movie seems to have taken the character in a different direction, but a sequel could retcon that by merely revealing that the history Atlanteans were taught was mostly false.

The Surface Learns About AtlantisIn the world of the DCEU, the surface world doesn't have any idea that there's an entire civilization living underneath the waves. Aquaman mosty dealt with getting Arthur to a place where he felt he was worthy of ruling Atlantis, but a huge part of the character's struggle is his responsibility to Atlantis and the surface. There are plenty of storylines where Aquaman tries to create a bridge between the two worlds, often to mixed results. Atlanteans are too set in tradition and distrustful while the surface is fearful of this superpower nation that appeared out of nowhere. Aquaman 2 could get great mileage out of bringing Atlantis out of the shadows and the impact that has on the whole world.

Aquaman's Very Own Super TeamAquaman is best known for working with the Justice League, but he's led a superhero team of his very own called The Others. During his younger years, Arthur wound up leading a group of characters who decided to collect and protect seven mystical Atlantean artifacts. Each member of the team eventually claimed a relic of their own, each possessing a unique ability, like teleportation or generating force fields. The Others are a pretty varied bunch and haven't entirely left an impact since their debut in 2012, but Aquaman 2 could change that. It'd be interesting to learn what Arthur's younger years were like with them, or The Others could be retooled as strangers who find Atlantean artifacts, and Aquaman and Mera have to get them back.

Drowned EarthIf you're looking for an epic story to inspire a sequel, then look no further than "Drowned Earth." The Aquaman/Justice League crossover featured a trio of cosmic sea gods called the Ocean Lords who arrive on Earth looking for revenge for actions taken centuries ago and, of course, Aquaman is the one who has to pay the piper. The villains literally drown the Earth, wiping out almost all the land with poison water while mutating any living creature that touches the ocean into fish monsters. Black Manta even gets to play a role by stealing Aquaman's powers for himself. It's a pretty epic storyline, though maybe a little too much for the first sequel. Still, director James Wan went big with Aquaman, so why shouldn't Aquaman 2?

Why Black Widow And Bruce Banner Didnt Have A Bigger Infinity War Reunion, According To The Russo Brothers

Why Black Widow And Bruce Banner Didnt Have A Bigger Infinity War Reunion, According To The Russo Brothers

Warning: spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War! Don't read any further if you do not want to know what happens in the latest MCU adventure!

It's no secret that Avengers: Infinity War is a crowded movie. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster is jam-packed with heroes and villains, and it thrives off of its ability to explore the subtle nuances of their relationships. One relationship that doesn't get too much attention is the romance between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) that started in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Addressing this subplot during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Joe Russo explained that the duo didn't have a more fleshed out reunion because much of their relationship is "unspoken." Russo explained:

There's a sort of unspoken truth that there's no need for a spoken resolution.

Remember, Banner and Black Widow do get a moment to reunite ahead of the Battle of Wakanda. They meet each other at the Avengers HQ in New York, and they share a knowing glance that implies that they're happy to see each other as more than just as teammates. Neither of them is particularly good at expressing his or her feelings, so according to Joe Russo's comments on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, they let that brief scene reveal the extent of their happiness to see one another. Years have passed since they have seen one another, and it wouldn't be within their characters to have a joyous reunion

The romance between Bruce Banner and Black Widow threw some fans off when it began in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Seemingly moving away from Liv Tyler's Betty Ross from The Incredible Hulk, the MCU put Hulk and Widow together because of their mutual sense that their pasts and life circumstances made them monsters. Marvel subtly nodded to the relationship in Captain America: Civil War and Thor: Ragnarok, so it's clear that the studio still acknowledges the romance, but it does not seem particularly interested in making that a front and center narrative element.

Of course, one other thing worth addressing about this is the fact that there's still one more movie to round out this story. Avengers: Infinity War may not bend over backward to tackle the love story between Bruce and Black Widow, but with Avengers 4 right around the corner, it is still entirely possible that we will see more elements of that love story. We already know that the fourth Avengers movie will round out an unofficial Hulk trilogy that began in Ragnarok, so it is easy to assume that Joe and Anthony Russo will make room for more scenes between Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently in theaters, so make sure to take a look at our review and our To 3D guide and check it out to see the history-making film for yourself! Looking ahead to the next year, Avengers 4 will premiere on May 3, 2019!

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula

However, Bruce Banner was never a character that Widow dated, as even the Marvel comic book writers knew that Bruce and Natasha just wouldn't click. Even though the MCU versions of Hulk and Black Widow are quite different from their comic-book counterparts, they apparently still aren't different enough to have a meaningful relationship together.

Jordan Peeles Terrifying Us Kicks Off SXSW With A Bold And Bloody Thrill Ride

Jordan Peele is about to embark on a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Hes going to relaunch The Twilight Zone as a network television series, opening up new worlds of mystery and suspense. Well, his latest movie Us proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that hes the ideal storyteller to carry that baton for a new generation, spinning yarns that stimulate and devastate, while also making you think and talk about difficult subjects after the fact.

The eyes of the film community were on Austin, Texas last night as Jordan Peeles highly anticipated follow up to Get Out opened the 2019 South By Southwest Film Festival. And its ironic that Us debuts at a festival named after a seminal Alfred Hitchcock work, because Peele is slowly making a claim as this generations Hitchcock. His command of the genre and his material is that strong, after only two films.

Theres a lot about Us I cant reveal, for fear of deflating some of the movies best reveals. But if you watched the trailers and the commercials, you likely know this much. A family on vacation encounters shadow versions of themselves in the dead of night. But even that surface logline strips away a lot of the nuance of why this innocent family is being targeted. And how they put themselves in that situation in the first place.

The answers to those queries are the meat of Jordan Peeles mystery, and that wont be explored here. What we can discuss is the tone and approach to Us, which is far deeper into the straight-up horror genre than Get Out was. Peeles previous Oscar winner (for Screenplay) had more, social commentary than scares, while Us coats its relevant talking points (and there are plenty) with splatters of blood.

The cast assembled by Peele revel in playing mirror images of themselves, with the normal Wilson family haunted by demented versions of themselves. And while every cast member finds ways to differentiate between the seemingly normal Wilson member and their deranged counterpart, its Lupita Nyongo who steals the spotlight for her fascinating performance on both sides of the reflections of her character, Adelaide Wilson.

Though the South By Southwest Film Festival is just now getting off to its first starts, I can tell you that Us has been a movie virtually everyone has been talking about, questioning things that they saw on screen what IS the deal with those rabbits?! and figuring out answers that arent readily available until a repeat screening. I can tell you, with 100% certainty, that Us will be a different movie the second time that you watch it. And you will watch it, again and again.

Us opens in theaters on March 22. Keep following CinemaBlend as our coverage of SXSW 2019 rolls along.
